Send Cara to Culinary School
My beloved mother and best friend, Cara Herdman, just celebrated her fiftieth birthday. She has spent her first fifty years as the matriarch of our family, a powerhouse in the construction world, and the most selfless person my heart has ever known.
Mom is the type of person who will stop at nothing to help others realize their dreams, and becomes a support system for every person she comes across - whether they ask for it or not. I have spent my 25 years as her daughter as a living testament to this, as she has held my hand through two degrees, multiple years spent abroad, and every in-between goal I've thrown at her with nothing but love and support.
Cara is the type of person you need to be careful around because if you tell her you want to go to college, or need a new fridge, she'll pay your application fees and give you her own appliances no matter how much you protest. She'll probably give you her leftovers for the road as well.
That being said, it's always been her dream to go to Vancouver to attend Culinary School, become a red seal chef, and make her desire to run her own restaurant/catering company a reality. When I last asked her about this (a common conversation in our household) she told me "It's not time for my dream. Once everyone else is taken care of, then it's time."
Not having it.
I have chosen to utilize gofundme as a platform because everyone I know who has been blessed with my mom's friendship knows how important this dream is to her, and I think that if everyone who has been impacted by her donates their coffee money for the day we could get her one step closer.
My goal is to present her with her first years tuition (BHAG) on Christmas morning so that she can start living the life she's most passionate about in 2019.
Mom was prepared to pull out all the stops in the application process as she was warned that she would have a challenging time being older in such a competitive process. In classic Cara discourse, she was able to charm the Academic Support Coordinator who passed her on to an impromptu interview at the SAIT Open House and she was verbally offered a seat in the program on the spot.
She wanted me to please post an update and again thank those who have helped her realize her dream thus far She cannot wait to see what the next two years have in store for her.
It is still my intention to keep this off of Cara's radar and under wraps, so I need help reaching the outer limits of her friend/family group (the ones that I may not have access to). If you know of anyone who has been lucky enough to be on the receiving end of my mothers love, please pass this link along or share it on your social media page. Every little bit helps.
Thank you again for all that you have done <3
