Sefer Torah for Kehila Ashuv Eleicha in the Netherlands.
Who are we?
Our Dutch organization has besides a training program also a small Kehila. And for many years now we help people to return to the Jewish heritage of their faith.
In Europe there are many people who come from a Jewish background and who have no idea of this Jewish background. This is due to the many persecutions and pogroms that have been here through the ages. Many Jewish families assimilated and end up in church or elsewhere, up to the point they forgot that they are Jewish at all. They are lost and can’t find any connection within the established churches.
And than there are some who didn’t know they are Jewish because of the second world war. The second world war has certainly contributed to the loss of Jewishness of a lot of people. After the second world war many people were afraid to tell about their Jewish background. Often the family only finds out about the Jewishness/Jewish background of one of their (grand)parents just before or after they passed away. It’s our goal to reach out as much as possible to these lost holy sparks.
We hear stories which move us to tears from people who always felt a kind of emptiness within their soul. Due our training program they feel like coming home after so many years. However, sometimes new problems arise because there are people who are no longer welcome in their families, because of the return to the Jewish religion, there is still a culture of fear of being openly Jewish in these families. And this is unfortunately for a reason, anti-Semitism is growing in Europe by the year! For example a man can’t walk on the street and be safe in Holland wearing a Kippah.
Many of these people learn in our organization how to look at their Bible through "Jewish eyes". We try to teach them Biblical Hebrew, the Jewish Prayers, how to celebrate the Biblical and Jewish holidays and Jewish Halacha etc.
Some of these people cannot prove with the right documents that they are Jewish indeed, because past generations were forced to abandon Judaism. Also in the second world war the resistance burned a lot of city archives, this to make it difficult for the Germans to find out who had a Jewish background. To be recognized as a Jew these days, people have to hand over documents of their Jewishness otherwise they are not welcome in the Synagogue. A giur-process is very expensive and also it is difficult because often they are married and their spouce don't want to go with them in the Jewish way and want to stay in church. And for these people who are reconected with Judaïsm and go in church they often has to face Christian Ant-Semitism and no longer welcome. The church often ask them to remove themselfs from Judaïsm again!
That's why we decided upon much prayer that besides training them also to give the people a place to worship on Shabbat so we started a "Kehila". And slowly we see that lost sparks are being added to this Kehila. Of course in Holland there are some Christian Messianic Congregations but they don’t recognize the Mishneh Torah, Jewish Halacha, Talmud and the most of them are Trinitarians.
Our Kehila feels very Blessed by Hashem but we would love to own a second hand Sefer Torah. We now use a Tourist scroll for our Torah Service and Bar Mitzva.
My name is Jaäcov Noorland I am the founder of the organization; Leerhuis Ashuv Eleicha. Me and my wife Jannie are training and helping all people who appeal to us and with the help of Hashem we do the best we can. All the work we do is on a non-profit base, it is our desire that Hashem gets all the glory, because without Him we are nothing. We love Hashem and we want to work for His Kingdom. We sympathize with the sorrow of all the lost sparks and have the desire that all Jewish souls come home.
