Seereer for Gambian Heroes

Hello,

My name is Tamsier Joof, founder of the Seereer Resource Centre (SRC)  and Seereer Radio . For those of you who have been following the Seereer Resource Centre for many years, you already know what we do and what we stand for. For those of you who are new to the SRC, our key objectives are the preservation of Seereer cultural heritage, and to fight against injustice and discrimination wherever we find it in Senegal, The Gambia and Mauritania.  Our newly created radio station - Seereer Radio is an extension of that work.

Many of you are also aware of  the recent political situation in The Gambia, the smallest country in West Africa. Since 1994 following a military coup d'état, this small country has been under the leadership of a brutal and oppressive regime, where state sanctioned secret killings, lack of democracy, maiming and illegal detentions are prevalent throughout.  After 22 years of Yahya Jammeh's illegal government, the Gambian people have only known death, destruction and fear. Following the brutal killing of Ebrima Solo Sandeng in April 2016, rape, torture and detention of three female members of the United Democratic Party (UDP) - which is the main opposition party and the illegal detention of the party leader Lawyer Ousainou Darboe and his executive committee, the political climate in the country shifted drastically. Gambians for the first time since the massacre of student demonstrators in 2000 rose up against the Jammeh regime demanding electoral reform and their constitutional right to full democracy. Although the regime tried various tactics to suppress the demonstrators, the Gambian people are more determined this time than ever, and want Yahya Jammeh to go so that they can reclaim their country and begin the process of instilling democracy in the country and healing the people after 22 years of brutal dictatorship.

To assist these brave Gambians who for the first time have risen against the Jammeh regime since 2000, the Seereer Resource Centre and Seereer Radio would like to make a direct appeal to the entire Senegambian community and sympathisers to donate to our efforts in order to assist these brave heroes. Every penny donated will go towards helping the demonstrators with food, blankets, water, transportation, etc., while they make sleepover demonstrations in the Gambian capital of Banjul and surrounding areas.  Please do not underestimate / under value anything. Even if you can only donate £1 that will help these people. If you can donate more, please do so. We thank each and every one of you for your support.

These brave Gambian heroes have sacrificed their personal and professional lives in order bring full democracy back to the Gambian people. Please help us help them with their effort - so we can give them the support and resources they need in order to bring this struggle to a fruitful end, and grant their children and descendants  a better future.  Yahya Jammeh and his brutal regime will go one day, hopefully very soon, but for that to happen, these Gambian heroes will need resources to sustain them and continue with the struggle. We appeal to the entire Senegambian community throughout the Diaspora to give whatever you can. By standing shoulder to shoulder with these Gambian heroes, you are fighting in the right side of history.

Thank you.
