The Central Oregon Seed Exchange was created in 2012 to fill a demand for access to locally grown flower and vegetable seed in Deschutes County. We have grown over the years from providing a box of mixed seeds in 2012 at a local farm store to providing over 6.000 packets of seeds annually to local schools, non-profits, preschools, WIC/SNAP programs, tribal gardens, local landowners, small farmers, low income residents and most importantly CHILDREN.
The goal of COSE is to provide the OPPORTUNITY to create healthy food choices within our families and community settings. 90% of our seed and seed packet distribution is free or donated. We utilize locally grown seed from our surrounding farmers, seek donations from local gardeners and landowners and finally grow our own on site.
Our new Seed to School Program was created from our Elk Meadow Elementary School pilot school garden program where each child in the classroom/school goes home with a packet of local flower or vegetable seed. Last year 700 children took seed home! This mean 700 families were eating healthy food, engaging with their children OUTSIDE and creating a life long skill-set to carry on with them for the future.
We would like help growing by providing this service to each school in the Bend-LaPine School District. We are needing a few donated dollars to help us improve our existing donated infrastructure. We lost our fence-line this year to deer damage, we are seeking funds to replace this with new T-Post and Fence. I have labor donated to install the fence, we just need the roots and foundation provided by you donating a few extra dollars to help us move forward.
This is our first time in our 6 year history of the program to seek outside funds, we appreciate your support and donations towards this existing successful program here in Deschutes County. Let's root for the kids, healthy food equals happy children!!!
