SEEDS FOR NICARAGUA

Seeds for Nicaragua is a campaign to buy planting seed of rice  beans, and corn in support of rural farming families on Ometepe Island in SW Nicaragua.

As many of you know I lived for more than a decade in this region establishing grass root non-profit projects focused on food security. I am intimate with the realities and communities this campaign will support.

Today Nicaragua is once again in a tailspin. The short of it is that there has been an economic collapse and a near halt of commodity goods in circulation. This is staging for hunger.

The goal with this campaign is to raise funds to purchase 6,000+ pounds of planting seeds for the coming growing season which begins in mid-May. Many rural families have had to eat their planting stock and now face extended hunger if the next crop cannot be planted.

With the support of community leaders on Ometepe Island, who have a known track record of being capable, reliable, and wise,  we are able to facilitate locating the families most in need and to ensure fair distribution.

This is a stop-gap emergency measure to break the famine cycle early on before it causes longer term problems.  Families will be able to start planning for next year instead of just their next meal.  Along this vein, Project Bona Fide on Ometepe Island has generously offered to donate a fruit tree with each acre planted.

Approximately 100 pounds of rice or beans will sow an acre and costs 100 dollars.  If you can sponsor an acre of seed that would be great, two acres of seed magnificent, but ½, 1/4, or even 1/8th of an acre will make a world of difference.

Thank you for joining me.

Michael Judd

*To extend your support please consider emailing and posting this campaign to friends along with a short personal note. This small act could plant many acres...

** Rice and corn are planted in May but beans are sown in October so this campaign will remain open and all funds raised after May will go towards the October bean planting.

Seeds of change are being sowed! Thanks to the generous outreach of our North American community and superb coordinating by Nicaraguan community leaders 42 families now have the means to grow much needed food. The ripples from this effort cannot be fathomed. Thank you to all who jumped in and donated.

And to those who would still like to support the campaign is open and accepting support for the next sowing of beans in August.

Pictured here are the rice seed germination trials conducted prior to purchasing seed, a grateful mother, and representing family members.

Again, thank you. This action is making a huge difference to many lives.

We are on our way to germination! Isabella has organized 38 families to receive rice and corn planting seeds, and Angel is test germinating the seed to check for viability before full purchase.

So far so good. All lining up. Hopefully the rains will soon be coming and steady..

The campaign is still open for donations and will remain so through the bean planting season in August so please keep sharing with your family, friends and networks.

I will check back soon with details and pictures.

Many blessings for your support - it's all about to germinate!!

I am so touched and pleased by the fast and strong support given. I have already updated Angel and Isabella that we certainly have the means to begin coordinating the seed purchases and to let families know seed is on its way! They can now confidently begin preparing the earth and look forward to the May rains and having food to grow - this spark of hope is no small gift, thank you again.

Blessings,

Michael
