Security Guard who Died a Hero

Donation protected

Hi everyone. My name is Tracey and I am starting this campaign for someone I don't know personally, but whose story affected me profoundly. I am from South Africa but living in Germany, hence why I am starting this campaign in Euros. South Africa is notorious for its horrific and violent crime and most of us have become so desensitized to the news that we don't even bat an eyelid anymore when we read about a crime story.

However, I was really affected by this particular story - it just really moved me, especially because the crime happened in a place I am so familiar with. Here is a link to the story, so that you can read for yourselves.

But for a quick break down, a businessman was walking in a busy area called Rosebank in Johannesburg. Four suspects were attempting to rob him when the security guard, Thomas Israel, ran to see if he could help. A shootout ensued and Thomas was shot and killed. The man who was robbed was alright thanks to Thomas stepping in to help.

What makes the story even sadder is that security guards get paid next to nothing in South Africa - they risk their lives ona  daily basis for a salary that doesn't cover much, and many - if not most - all live in poverty in very poor townships.

I made a comment on the news article saying how heratbreaking it was, and the sister of the security guard actually reached out to me - I don't know them at all, but I have been talking to them, and I really feel in my heart that I NEED to help them somehow.

Thomas, who was 25, leaves behind a child and siblings - he was their breadwinner.

His memorial service is on the 6th September in Johannesburg.  I simply want to raise funds for his family to cover the costs of the funeral. They really don't have much money, and I feel Thomas deserves to be honoured and given the respect he deserves for trying to save someone's life. I have asked for 400 euros, which is about 6000 ZAR. I really, really believe that this small amount can help them in a big way. And I really want to help.

Seeing as the funeral is tomorrow, the sooner I get the funds, the better - but there is no rush. I will be in charge of the funds and will then transfer the money to Thomas's family in South Africa.
