Even when you plan and save for the unexpected, sometimes it isn't enough.
In December 2016, my mom (Susan) was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Esophageal cancer is often detected when it's "too late" so when a routine CT scan for her OTHER GI cancer called GIST (that's right, she has two totally separate GI cancers) showed a thickening of her esophagus, we had to act fast. The next 12 weeks were a blur of doctors visits, tests, meetings with the tumor board at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and worrying.
In January, she started a rigorous treatment plan that included six weeks of daily radiation treatments, weekly chemo, weekly blood work, and bi weekly doctors visits...not to mention a five day stay in Olean General Hospital for severe dehydration from radiation. Each treatment and visit was another copay and that hospital stay was not cheap.
On April 20th, 2017, she had a major operation to reconstruct her stomach into a working, non-cancerous esophagus AND as a bonus, they were able to remove the two ribs that had the GIST. We don't yet know how much the copays for this surgery will be but we can only imagine they will be astronomical.
Insurance covered a huge chunk (before insurance, her radiation treatment alone was $42,000---absolutely ridiculous ) but the copays are piling up. She'll be unable to return to work for the next 12 weeks as she recovers.
I know people have been asking about where they can send flowers and gifts but the truth is...a monetary donation would go much further for my parents.
We appreciate anything and everthing you're able to donate. We're so thankful my mom was given a second chance at life.
