Help a Local Community Combat Waste

Imagine 270 tonnes of garbage being produced a day in a city of around 1 million residents. 230 tonnes of which is being collected, and directly dumped into the only landfill in the whole city without being managed properly. The remaining 40 tonnes are left uncollected, thus piling up along the streets every day in various neighborhoods in the city. That is the current situation in Siem Reap city, the third largest city in Cambodia.
As a city in one of the developing countries and the national main tourist attracting site, Siem Reap is growing very fast. This means more and more waste is being produced each day. According to the estimation by Cambodian Education and Waste Management Organization (COMPED - WM), the amount of waste being dumped in the Anlong Pi landfill in Siem Reap city increased fourfolds between 2004 and 2016. However, at the same time, the city is still very unprepared in terms of waste management. Some of the waste is burned, buried or dumped in streets and canals, which creates a health risk and makes the city uglier.
Tackling waste management is, indeed, a difficult task that requires huge efforts. Although many people in Cambodia are aware of the issue, many are either ignorant or believe that this is beyond them without helps from the government, which is not true. It is all the small trash that people throw away each day that creates huge piles of rubbish. Similarly, if people start reducing the things they throw away carelessly, sooner or later, there will be no more trash improperly managed. Small and simple actions are more effective than what people give them credit for.
With this enthusiasm in mind, SEALNet Project Cambodia 2018 - Siem Reap (PC18-SR) aims to inspire and empower the youths from local communities in Siem Reap to come together and work hand-in-hand to resolve waste-related issues through Small Tests of Change. Upon completion, we hope that they will start to see the impacts through small actions, learn to value those actions and the changes, continually repeat those actions and spread the awareness on the importance of proper waste management.
To make this happen, we are cooperating with local partners to provide the beneficiaries with training and practical knowledge in waste management. In the Leadership component, mentees will get trained on how to effectively deliver the message to people in local community, as the initiators, as well as exposed to leadership trainings for self-development. The Service component will involve engagement sessions between project team and the locals where they will work together in activities prepared by the project team. To ensure the sustainability of these activities, there will be post-project missions, carried out by project members to monitor the outcomes as well as spread awareness on this issue further, that less trash means more beautiful communities, less trash on the streets means more value in recycled and reused products, small actions together bring big impacts and that "Less is More."
