Scrap Iron Press Studio Move

$2,445 of $5,000 goal

Hello all and thanks for visiting our page.  Scrap Iron Press: Letterpress & Book Arts Studio is a community-based art studio offering letterpress workshops and access to antique printing equipment for professional and novice artists and writers. And it’s on the move!  We’re loading up about 9,000 pounds (whew!) of antique presses, lead and wood type, a beautiful vintage paper cutter, a stone table, plus loads of other cool stuff and heading south -- from Grand Forks, N.D., to the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.

The Scrap Iron Press team offers 30 years of graphic design, typography and letterpress experience.  We’re committed to public art and community engagement. We believe in the transformative nature of art and we’re dedicated to the virtues of the Slow (art) Movement.

As we hand-set individual letters and print using 500-year-old technology, we’re also doing our part to preserve the art and legacy of letterpress printing.

Thanks to serendipitous timing and a great facility (Racing Magpie ) housing artists with like-minded goals — community engagement, collaboration and creativity — our move is happening sooner than expected. The empty space you see in the photo is just waiting for us and we plan to move at the end of September 2016.

So here’s where (we hope) you come in.  Letterpresses and drawers of type aren’t light—in fact, they are down-right heavy! Two of our presses are almost one ton each, add to this four table-top presses plus multiple drawers full of type, and things get complicated. To move all this across two states and establish Scrap Iron Press in Rapid City, S.D., we need your help.

We appreciate any assistance you can give in meeting our goal.  All funders will get a hand-printed thank you card in the mail fresh off the newly moved presses.  And there are other benefits too, such as letterpress lessons, custom prints, etc.

Thank you and thank you again!

Press on.
