The Rieland Family

Every family has a journey. It starts with two people who just seem to click. They make each other laugh; they keep each other sane; they become each other’s rocks during the hard times. This family is no different.

Scott and Naomi met in college in 2004. One of Naomi’s best friends introduced Scott and Naomi, and while it may not have been ‘love at first sight,’ there was definitely something that “clicked.” They quickly became a couple and dated for 5 years until Scott proposed on their college graduation day.

In April 2008, Scott and Naomi were married in Scott’s hometown church. The ceremony was a beautiful, warm celebration of their love, despite the surprise snowstorm that blew through.

Scott has focused his life’s work on helping others as a firefighter in the Sioux Falls Fire Department and through volunteering with the Tea Fire Department. Naomi is a Social Worker who has dedicated her life to working with underprivileged populations, particularly as a Young Fatherhood Re-Entry Coach to young men who had been previously incarcerated. She also works with marginalized populations of children who are struggling with their education. Naomi currently works at the Tea Middle School in South Dakota.

Of course their greatest work is their family.

In February 2009, they welcomed their first son Zach. Sadly, they suffered a miscarriage in December of 2010. In 2011, their second son William arrived followed by their youngest son, Harrison in 2014. In 2016, the family went through a second miscarriage.

In 2014 the family went through a shattering loss when Naomi’s mom, Cindi died suddenly in a vehicle accident. Cindi had raised Naomi and her siblings as a single parent and was a cornerstone of her small community. The loss shook the family and Scott and Naomi clung to each other, their children and their extended family. As time went on, this profound loss served to further strengthen Scott and Naomi’s conviction that family is everything.

Even with a full house: three boys and a new puppy, Scott and Naomi have long felt that their family is not quite complete. Through prayer, discussion and their own work experiences, they have felt called to adopt.

The Adoption Process

Many people know that the road is long to adoption. Scott and Naomi have been talking about the process for a couple years now, determining whether to pursue a domestic or international adoption. There are many ups and downs in the process and often people find themselves “going slow to go fast.” Adoptions are often equal parts planning and praying.

The exciting new is that Scott and Naomi have finally “met” a child that they are aching to bring home! This is why they need your help.

Grateful Girl

Gu Jia You (the baby’s Chinese name), was born on June 29th, 2015 in China. Her name means “hope that you grow up into a girl who is grateful and gives back to society.”

Unfortunately this little girl was born with some severely complicated heart issues and is awaiting a second surgery. She is now at an orphanage in China. The hope is that she will be able to have the surgery in America with the support of her adoptive family. Outcomes are far better for small children who have a loving support system around them. For this reason, Scott and Naomi are working to get a “medical expedite” on the adoption process.

Also, for this reason, it is imperative that funds are raised to help support Scott and Naomi as they travel down this long road to adoption and bettering the health of their new daughter. The adoption process is astronomically expensive, but adding medical bills and travel costs increases the expenses even more.

Adoption: $30,000

Travel Expenses: $5,000-10,000

Medical Costs: Unknown at this time

Other: $2,000-$5,000

Any support helps. Truly.

Gratitude

We are so grateful for your support of Scott and Naomi’s continued journey to build their family. Their ongoing commitment to family and to lifting up those who are struggling is truly inspiring. Join me in helping them reach their goal.

All funds will go directly to Scott and Naomi to help with adoption, medical and related expenses. This fundraiser is endorsed by them.
