Scooter's Diabetic Vet Bills

Donation protected
This is Scooter. He’s my best friend and has been with me since I was 12 years old. He’s such a sweet and caring dog and is very much loved. I got Scooter when he was 6 weeks old and he is now 10 years old. He’s never had any health problems until now. The day after Thanksgiving I took Scooter to the vet. I thought he had a kidney infection due to the increase of urination, drinking water, and losing 4 pounds in a couple of months, but instead the doctor came back in and told me he had diabetes as well as conjunctivitis. I paid the $20 for the drops and the vet said he should be better in a week just continue with the drops. That I knew I could do, but the diabetes diagnosis, was a shock.

Just his office visit with the exam was $100+ which took me by surprise. But that has been paid, he will need to see a vet that can treat him for this. I wanted a second opinion and went to another vet for a complete blood work up ($400), he was officially diagnosed with diabetes with his sugar level in the 600’s.

I went out and bought syringes, insulin, and a glucose monitor ($60). I took him to the vet to learn how to give him his shots and learn more about diabetes. The vet said he is not too ill nor in pain as of right now and I want to make sure now that I am giving him his insulin shots he stays well.

I am not sure how I’m going to cover his vet costs. I am a college student and I am currently unemployed and with next semester around the corner I have my spring tuition to pay as well. Scooter has a long life ahead of him and he is such a happy dog, I don’t want him hurting. Along with having diabetes he also has a liver shunt and a heart murmur.

He will then make several more trips to the vet to get his insulin regulated. I will be having to give him his shots twice a day. The money donated will go to his (monthly): vet bills, needle costs, insulin, and glucose reader accessories. As well, all of his new prescription dog food to maintain a diet for a dog with diabetes. His unused food and treats will be donated. By doing some research I estimated it will be probably $80/ month for the needles and insulin- the vet bills (not included in the monthly cost) should not be as much once he is regulated on his medicine, therefore not having to visit the vet as much.

I have set my goal to $1,500 because this is a life-long disease and I will have monthly purchases to make forever as well as vet visit every 3 months to do a glucose curve.

Any donations are appreciated. This will be the best New Years imaginable. A lifespan of a Maltese is 12-15+ years and I want to make sure he maintains that lifespan as long as he is not suffering. I want to keep Scooter happy and healthy all I need is your help.

Please help me keep my best friend with me. I don't know what I'd do without him.

I will be posting pictures of his vet bills/ diabetic neccessities cost so far.
