Scene D Theatre Project

Donation protected

There are dozens of independent theatre companies popping up across the state of Iowa, and yet none in the Cedar Valley.

That’s what we’re trying to change with Scene D.

Our local theatre scene has two long-standing community theatres and the UNI theatre program. Because of this 100-plus-year history, Scene D is uniquely positioned to explore in new directions.

Consider us the scrappy little cousin to the longtime theaters of our area — we’re a small team of Cedar Valley artists from diverse backgrounds. We’re a theatre project because 1) we're using our tools to make stuff and 2) we are a work in progress.

We’re excited to do shows that folks wouldn’t see unless they hop in the car to Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, or Chicago. We’re already slotted for shows in August and October — Stop Kiss by Diana Son, and In the Next Room; or The Vibrator Play by Sarah Ruhl.

But more than these projects — subversive though they are — we want to give creative opportunity to those in our community that might normally be overlooked — think LGBT artists, female-led tech teams, and casting outside of racial lines. And we center stories by and about those same sorts of people on the margins.

With your help, we can make this happen. The Cedar Valley is certainly big enough — and ready enough.

For more, check out our website  and FB page.

What are the funds for?

Our first show, Stop Kiss by Diana Son, went up in August. Our second show, In the Next Room, took place — and sold out — in October. Next up? So I Could Be Macbeth, March 5th at the Hearst Center for the Arts.

Performance rights, operating theatre lights, scripts, printed promo materials, scenic supplies, paying our team (which we really, really want to do) — we need community backing to deliver quality work.

And these are just our first shows of — hopefully — many.

What your support means:

Every donation is  one person that sees our vision and says, “Yes, I want that to happen here.” And that person is an essential piece of our freakin’ vision for this. We want to grow out of the people in the Cedar Valley and be a collective of artists with a shared vision, sharing theatre that people want to see happen.

Thank you, and let's start something remarkable.
