Scammed by Craigslist Check

Donation protected
About a month ago, I created a post on Craigslist for my dad, hoping to sell some furniture sitting in the garage. On March 19th this year, a person contacted me over email, showing interest in buying our cabinet set, which was listed as $300 at the time. He then asked for my mailing address for the purpose of sending me a check through the mail, and I thought little of it and decided to tell him.

About a few days later, my family and I would be surprised with a large envelope from Tennessee, branded by the Amoco Federal Credit Union with a pay of $1,750 dated a day after the person called me. We thought of it as very strange that he was overpaying for it, but he soon assured us that the difference after the furniture payment was for a third party that will come over to help move the furniture overstate. Seeing no harm, we decided to go along with his instructions to cash the check (which the bank cleared) and then eventually how to pay the movers. However, following his instructions would eventually lead to losing $1,750 due to it being a fraudulent check. My dad’s bank account would have gone negative if I didn’t have enough money to lend him.

I’m telling this story so that anybody reading this won’t fall for this kind of scam. I understand that in retrospect, it was a very dumb scam to fall for, but in all honesty I didn’t even know this was a possible crime to commit. Normally we would have moved on from it and take it as a hard lesson, but a month later, the current situation we now stand in makes it hard not to ask for help.

My father got laid off from his job all the way back in January 2017 and hasn’t found another yet. It’s also getting harder to pay for the bills every time another month passes by. It’s only due to the saving grace of my auntie that my mom is able to have a part-time job at her salon. Recently, however, my mom got bumped down from a nail-caring role to the cashier due to a customer’s complaint so now she is getting paid less. The financial situation is getting very scary for us so I please ask for your donation. Our goal is $1750, which will be enough to get us back on our feet. Help us keep the house a bit longer.

If you can’t donate money, then please help us by spreading the word! Share this link and tell others to pass on the link and have them tell others to pass it on too. It’ll be very much appreciated!

Thank you for your time reading about our troubles.
