Project Say Something

Or Mission: Say Something's mission is to unify, heal, educate and empower our community to realize social justice through non-violent comminication about racism.

Say Something is the result of community compassion. In the wake of the Ferguson riots and social unrest surrounding very public incidents involving police use of deadly force- the question was asked, “What can we do?” We gathered the community of varying races and faiths to discuss the issues. We came away with an understanding that to make a change, we must empower and educate individuals to lovingly address  uncomfortable acts of intolerance as they occur.  This movement encourages each one of us to start within our own circles of influence with our family, friends, and co-workers.  Say Something is about compassionate correction.

We decided to create a Public Service Announcement that directly addressed and spoke to the heart of racism.  Everyone involved in the project donated their time, expertise, and deeply personal experiences of dealing with intolerance.  The message resonated to the point that individuals in the neighboring city of Huntsville, AL reached out and said they want to “Say Something” too!   Say Something Huntsville one month later.  Racial tension is not the only negative social condition  Our goal is to address racism head on without injecting chastisement and public or private shaming.

We promote and inclusion and tolerance in the following ways:

1. Awareness – We  hire  talented videographers to create a 1-2 minute videos on issues that are difficult to address and therefore often avoided.  We will also use funding to support our publication, Garden Spices magazine, which embraces diversity, directly and provides broad cultural perspective.

 2. Education – Say Something educates communities by hosting public forums and panel discussions, workshops and public speaking engagements.  "Compass"...our after school and summer program provides a diverse, safe and holistic environment for young minds to soar!

 3. Empowerment – The ultimate goal is to heal. Many programs increase awareness,  yet fail to offer additional support to those affected by the issue.  Statistics prove minorities are 50% more likely to suffer from mental illness.  Yet, mental  We  offer counseling services hosted by volunteer licensed mental health professionals in an effort to support those affected by the conditions of racism.  We will also offer African American residents a stronger voice in the Shoals community by cultivating their professional passions through entrepreneurship workshops and grassroots leadership development.
