Saving Smokey Fund

Please help Happy Tails Cat Sanctuary save our cat, Smokey.

He has a cyst on the duct to his liver (ductile hepatic cyst), which will kill him if it is left untreated.  Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital will perform the surgery.  Smokey's surgery will cost $2,500.00.

Smokey has been fighting to survive since December 2015, when he was diagnosed with liver lipidosis.  He had to be force feed every two hours to help him survive for two weeks.  He was given fluids everyday and several medications.  He was so sick and his skin was lemon yellow.  Smokey was in a very frail condition, but he pulled through.  He has never fully recovered.   That is why this surgery is so important.  This little guy is still fighting to live.  Surgery is the cure.  Smokey is on medication for vomiting.  The cyst has become so large  his side is bulging.  With surgery he will live a full and normal life.

Smokey is an affectionate “special needs” cat who was rescued as a young kitten nearly four years ago when he and his two siblings were found behind a building in Kirtland, Ohio.  Their mother cat was nowhere to be found, so Happy Tails volunteers bottle-fed them with a feline mother’s milk replacement formula every two hours for a few weeks.  The other two kittens became very healthy and were adopted out, but Smokey sustained some liver damage from his pre-rescue malnutrition.  This guy is such a cool cat!  He’s well mannered and just a pleasure to have around.  He will be a loving addition in a good adoptive home after he recuperates from his surgery.

The sanctuary’s founder, Jeanne Bones, adopted him as a personal “special needs” pet who needed extra care.  Following Ms. Bones’ death last November, Happy Tails volunteers continued to give Smokey special care, but recently noticed he was ill.  An ultrasound revealed he has a “ductile hepatic cyst,” which is a cyst on the duct to his liver.  If untreated, it will kill him.  Surgery will cost $2,500, but afterward Smokey can live a normal life and be available for an adoptive home.

All the volunteers at Happy Tails Cat Sanctuary are very grateful and would like to thank you for your donation.  It means so much to all of us to see Smokey healthy again..

Headquartered in Chesterland, the non-profit Happy Tails Cat Sanctuary serves Greater Cleveland. Since 1982, cats with varying needs have found refuge in a mostly cageless environment.   The sanctuary (which can’t currently take in any additional cats) has found adoptive homes for numerous cats, but some will spend the rest of their lives at Happy Tails because they are not traditionally adoptable due to age or disabilities.
