Saving Ashton Albion ABC
Founded in 1991, Ashton Albion Amateur Boxing Club has been operating for 28 years. Ashton Albion Boxing Club has not only taught youngsters to box, but it has also taught discipline, confidence and helped to change and shape the lives of many of its members.
The Club is run by Wayne Heywood and two other coaches on a purely voluntary basis. There hasn’t been a youth club around the area for many years and this is one of the only places still left where youngsters can go to keep them off the streets. When there’s nothing for them to do, they can end up going in the wrong direction and this club provides a vital alternative to help prevent this. Wayne describes himself not just as a coach, but a parent, guardian and agony aunt all in one.
They don’t have much funding and rely on the subs to cover costs.
Due to unforeseen circumstances they now find themselves in the position of needing new premises. With the support of the local community, interviews with Tameside Radio and Manchester Evening News, letters being written to local councillors etc, and help from Mike Craven, they have managed to secure a new location, close to the centre of Ashton.
The new premises however, needs work doing to ensure if complies with all Health, Safety, Legal and Regulatory requirements, in addition to being a place where both male and females of all ages can go and have the necessary facilities for them.
They have already received so much support from the local community and businesses already, and although some of the work will be covered with hard graft of which there is no shortage of volunteers, other aspects will incur financial costs, for which renovation work will be starting as soon as possible.
Any donations you can make or fundraising activities no matter how small will be massively appreciated. We are estimating the costs could be around £25,000 but won’t know until the different works begin and inspections have been completed, so we will amend the targets when we have more information.
