John Thomas  TWO RIVERS, WI
The Two Rivers Historical Society of Wisconsin has three museums, but this is all about the Historic Washington house. Built in 1850 as a bar and boarding house. In 1906 a third story was added, living quarters and the Grand Ballroom on the second floor. It then became the center of community events.
Now a free museum an ice cream parlor in honor of Two Rivers being the home of the first ice cream sundae, run by volunteers ranging from age 60s to the 90s. The Ice cream Parlor pays most of our day to day bills. Everything else has to come from fund rasing. After several years of intense fund raising we have just finished replacing 47 windows. Now it is time to turn to the outside of the building, the soffit and many trim boards are starting to rot and need to be replaced and painted, it will be a big job. With heavy rains last week we found we have a leak and it is treating one of the murals, a more extensive inspection turned up several large cracks with the plaster starting to sage. We now have to turn all efforts to securng the roof and refurbishing the murals, and we don't have the money. We just can't allow them to fall into disrepair again. The Ballroom is the crown jewel of our little museum. With another Wisconsin winter headed our way, we need to act fast to take care of the roof. All moneys collected will be used only for the refurbishing of the Washington house, and the progress of repairs will be posted on our web site.
Many of our older volunteers have been at it for 30 years and have worked thousands of hours. We have to maintain the Washington house for them and the many groups who use the ballroon for plays, recital's, anniversaries and wedding and baby showers, and the many young families that come every year as part of their vacation.
When I started to volunteer 3 years ago, I thought maybe once a week.  But this place and all the volunteers changed that. in gets under your skin and you want to do more.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and please visit us on facebook, and if your in Wisconsin stop in and see just how grand our ballroom is.

Well now that things have slowed down at the Washington house, all the out side stuff is done, after the first of the year we hope to have work start on the murals in the ballroom. Have a happy thanksgiving and a very merry Christmas.

Good things are happening at the Washington house. This last week a lady called, told us she brought a group in last year, they were going to eat in the park, but it rained. Came to the Washington house and ate in the bar room, then she played the piano, and all sang along, had a great time, but the piano was out of tune and one paddle didn't work. She paid to have all the work. What a nice thing to do. Thanks for reading, John
