10K Ways to Save a Baby 2017 

Our plea: Operating a nonprofit is only made possible by a supportive community.  At this time, our biggest need is a new freezer, to accomodate more hospitals requesting human donor milk and community members willing to donate it.

In the lab we say, "Every drop counts"; today, it's every donation.  

Whether your baby was in the NICU, you are a milk donor, you operate in the medical field, or you believe in investing in the health of our future generation, we need you. 

Who: Mothers' Milk Bank of Florida , the only one in the state, accredited by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America .


What:
Our largest freezer, donated two years ago when we opened, has finally quit on us. In order to meet the growing need from hospitals and NICU's, we require more room to store precious liquid gold.  As we recruit  donors and service more hospitals, it is crucial we add a freezer immediately.

How much: Our goal is to install our own walk-in freezer, costing $10,000. Currently we are  gratefully borrowing a freezer from our landlord, OneBlood, but we have to be prepared to store more milk. 

More info: Neonatologists are most concerned about preventing necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a disease that attacks the intestinal tract, damaging or destroying it, and requiring surgery to repair or remove the intestines. Emergency surgery on a preterm infant is difficult and dangerous. Mother’s milk makes a huge difference in how well these little babies do after birth because it vastly reduces the incidence of NEC, and it helps to repair the intestines should they become infected. Human milk fights infection while providing ideal nutrition.
