Help us gather enough signatures to hold the first successful referendum on a land use law in the state of Idaho!
We have until July 30, 2018 to collect 40,594 signatures of registered voters in Ada County. This referendum has the potential to change the way development occurs not only in Ada County, but in the state of Idaho as well.
Our organization seeks to challenge an ordinance that governs an 1,800 home subdivision proposed in the Dry Creek Valley, located just 5 miles northwest of Boise, Idaho.
Ada County Commissioners deprived citizens of their right to have a real say about this ordinance before they signed it into law. Since approval of the ordinance, the developer, Boise Hunter Homes, and Ada County Commissioners have actively opposed this democratic process and have gone to extreme lengths to silence citizens involved in this effort and to shut down the referendum.
A referendum is a democratic petition process. We believe citizens ought to have had a real say in the approval of a subdivision that will have a larger population than 86% of municipalities in Idaho.
After trying everything we could think of to make our voices heard to no avail, we began the referendum process as a way to hold Ada County Commissioners accountable for their mismanagement of this project and to give the community back its voice.
The Dry Creek Valley is an incredible place. It has immense historical, agricultural, cultural, recreational, ecological, and intrinsic value. While we oppose the development, this petition process is bigger than any development plan, any ordinance or land use law. It is about holding elected officials accountable when they fail to do what is best for the people whom they were elected to serve. It is about the community demanding to be valued as an integral part of the planning process during this time of rapid growth in Boise and beyond. It is about giving the community back its voice in a planning decision that will affect us all. It is about the community showing the powers that be that we will insist on better plans for smarter growth in Idaho.
