Keep Diplopundit Alive!

$31,950 of $30,000 goal

Goal Reached!
Diplopundit announced that it is shutting down at the end of 2014.  This privately-run fund is our attempt to save the blog.

http://diplopundit.net/2014/12/06/4000th/

Diplopundit, the anonymous blog that has been covering all things Department of State -- the good, the bad, and the ugly -- has been basically self-funded since it started in 2008.  For those of us who have been following this blog over the past six years, it's clear that the author puts tons of time, thought, and effort into researching and writing about our great institution.

Domani Spero has been providing this high quality service for free for six years. Each blog post takes hours to research and write. Every month this blog receives 15,000 regular readers from all over the world. Simply put, this is a resource we need to keep. We've set the target for this GoFundMe effort at $30,000. That might seem like a lot but when you consider the hours needed to research and write the blog posts as well as the cost of maintaining the website, not to mention how we've all benefited from having this resource for which there isn't an alternative, this seems reasonable.

Please note that we are avid readers of the blog who do not want this resource to disappear.  Diplopundit has agreed to let us run this campaign.  All funds raised will be transferred to Diplopundit.  This is an "All or Nothing" campaign which means donations are "pledges" until the campaign meets its goal.  If the campaign does not meet the goal, no donations are processed.

More about Diplopundit directly from the source:

"Diplopundit was started in March 2008 by the pseudonymous Domani Spero, an obsessive compulsive observer, diplomatic watcher, and opinionator who monitors the goings on at ‘Foggy-Bottom’ (i.e. the State Department) and the “worldwide available” universe from Albania to Zimbabwe.

The author, whose name means “see you tomorrow, I hope,” lived and worked overseas for an extended period and then, beginning in the 1990’s, hopscotched through Asia, Europe, and South and Central America. The blog, which is unapologetically opinionated and occasionally edgy, has no/no official connection to the U.S. Department of State, the Foreign Service or any other branch of the U.S. Government.

Diplopundit wades into leadership and management issues, realities of Foreign Service life, ambassadors and nominations, embassy report cards, current events in countries and regions which may or may not include prominent U.S. interests, and other developments in the international affairs community. The blog is updated each weekday and occasionally on weekends.

Domani Spero owns up to conducting public discourse as a private citizen and writes to insiders, “If you feel a rant coming because your boss asked you to take his/her dog for a walk during/after office hours, please feel free to send it here. Don’t worry, I can fire myself but your boss can’t.”

It is that kind of blog. It is not recommended for people with ostrich-like tendencies and carries a warning that eating before reading may result in occasional indigestion."

WE DID IT!!!

Congratulations all around! We're excited to see what Diplopundit has in store for us. We are still accepting donations so please continue to spread the word. As mentioned previously, there are administrative fees charged by GoFundMe and the payment processor, WePay. so the more we raise the better. Per their FAQ: "GoFundMe will deduct a 5% fee from each donation you receive. WePay deducts 2.9% + $0.30 per donation".

Thank you again! Maybe we should change our banner to "Kept Calm and Saved Diplopundit" now! :)
Our cheesy celebratory song!

OMGosh, everyone!! Diplopundit posted today! Did you miss it? Short and sweet, but definitely a sign of things to (hopefully) come. http://diplopundit.net/

We're $845 from our goal and just a few days to go. Please get the word out for this final push. It looks like the website is undergoing a redesign and we noted that there are a few parts that are password protected now. Maybe Diplopundit has a few surprises in store for us! We honestly don't know, but we do know that there had been talk of revamping the blog somewhat if we were able to pull this off.

Thank you again to everyone who has donated so far! It'll be great to have Diplopundit back up and running, keeping us all abreast on the goings-on in Foggy Bottom and around the world!

Dear Friends of Diplopundit,
Slightly less than three weeks to go and we're just a hair above $2000 away from our goal. Thank you to everyone who has donated, and thank you for getting the word out. As a reminder, this is an "all-or-nothing" campaign. If we don't hit the 30K mark (and hopefully more since there are some administrative fees levied by GoFundMe), our efforts will be for naught. So, please get the word out. If you are in a position to give just a little more, please consider doing so. Over 300 of us have put our money where our mouths are in support of this fantastic resource.

We wrote Diplopundit earlier this week and asked, given everything that has gone on in the month since the blog went silent, what types of posts we've missed out on. Here's a quick list:
-- IG article on FP
-- resignations of Gitmo Envoy, USAID Administrator
-- appointment of new DGHR
-- IG reports on medical support in Iraq, State Dept disciplinary process, inspection of Embassy Abidjan;
-- Blinken assumes office, had lunch with ELOs,
-- the ambo and Grand Budapest Hotel,
-- Marines in Bangui
-- death of Amb. Robert White and who needs courage?
-- guy renounced US cit then wants a U.S. visa,
-- Noah Mamet arrived in Argentina, Argentina in the news on death of prosecutor
-- Collen Bell assumed charge in Hungary
-- army deployed in Belgium, France, ALL OVER Europe, what's going on?
-- Yemen is falling apart. Senator calling for embassy evac, CNN calling for embassy evac; everyone and their neighbors want an evac, everyone second-guessing State, not a good trend. Also what are we to do with 55,000 Yemeni-Americans there?
-- Top danger posts in the FS, Jan 2015

So it's time for the final push. Please spread the word far and wide and help Save Diplopundit!

Happy 2015 to all! Again, tremendous thanks to everyone who has contributed so far. We're so close to our goal so please keep spreading the word far and wide!

We received an email from Diplopundit last night and have some (potentially) exciting news! Diplopundit may be able to relaunch once we hit the 30K goal! We will continue to work separate channels to obtain the 10K we need to reach our ultimate goal of 40K so please donate even if we exceed 30K via GoFundMe.

Again, many thanks on behalf of the campaign organizers and Diplopundit for your generosity. Nearly 24K in 24 days is an amazing accomplishment! Our little global village can accomplish great things when it bands together!
