K9 Ice has had a distinguished career. He has found lost children. He has saved lives. He has found large amounts of dangerous drugs. He has made sure that his partner makes it home every night. He has been loyal, steadfast, and dedicated. Last week, he seemed overly tired after training. He started drooling heavily. His handler immediately brought him to the vet. They couldn’t find anything, but the next day he started vomiting blood. He was rushed to a university veterinary hospital. Vets have located several ulcers, and are waiting for biopsy results to determine the next course of action. He stopped being able to eat, and is now being fed through a tube in his nose. Today, an administrator called his handler and simply said “Take your dog home. We are not spending any more money”. To an administrator, a dog is a piece of equipment. A line item on a spreadsheet. Much like an old car, once they cost too much to maintain... They are sometimes simply written off. To his partner, Ice is anything but disposable. He deserves someone to fight for him, the way he has fought for his country. He deserves the respect of being cared for properly. He deserves a comfortable retirement. In his time of need, he deserves the same loyalty that he freely gave. In order for this to be possible, his handler will need financial help. If you can give, your help would be greatly appreciated.
