The Granite Art Garden Non-Profit

Tax deductible
About Us:

The Granite Art Garden is an educational center for art, history, and sustainability which promotes experiential learning and engagement with the land. On our unique, historic quarry we provide a place to create and be inspired by art, both natural and handmade. We focus on creating a community space for individuals to gather, connect, and share with one another.

Our Goal:

We have exciting plans for the the expansion of infrastructure for demonstrations in stonework ,blacksmithing and historic wood-working, which were integral processes in historical quarrying.  We are also setting up a free on-going, self-serve, soft stone carving opportunity.  In addition, the non-profit will offer internships, residencies and short/long term classes in stonework, Other forms of art, and sustainable lifestyle.

Our Story:

This historic granite quarry is located in coastal Downeast Maine. In 1969 my parents, David and Elizabeth Buell, were part of the back to the land movement. They chose an alternative lifestyle of homesteading which included home-schooling, subsistent gardening, forestry, aquaculture, and pryotechnics.

In the 1800s this land was quarried for granite. My parents and I had a dream to share this land and preserve the rich history of quarrying, art and sustainability through educational programs.

Words from our supporters:

“Obadiah Buell has been one of the premier instructors for the Schoodic Arts Festival for much of its 20 year history. His classes are among the most popular and first to fill. The site of the Buell Quarry is a lovely piece of Maine property and the students love working there.  Obadiah is an outstanding instructor and is beloved among his students. Recently he joined the roster of the Schoodic Arts for All After School Art Club and led third through sixth grade  students to make two amazing sculptures that are installed on the Main Streets of Winter Harbor and Gouldsboro.  In addition to being a fabulous instructor, Obadiah is a wonderful sculptor who generously shares his work throughout the region.
