About Us:
The Granite Art Garden is an educational center for art, history, and sustainability which promotes experiential learning and engagement with the land. On our unique, historic quarry we provide a place to create and be inspired by art, both natural and handmade. We focus on creating a community space for individuals to gather, connect, and share with one another.
Our Goal:
We have exciting plans for the the expansion of infrastructure for demonstrations in stonework ,blacksmithing and historic wood-working, which were integral processes in historical quarrying. We are also setting up a free on-going, self-serve, soft stone carving opportunity. In addition, the non-profit will offer internships, residencies and short/long term classes in stonework, Other forms of art, and sustainable lifestyle.
Our Story:
This historic granite quarry is located in coastal Downeast Maine. In 1969 my parents, David and Elizabeth Buell, were part of the back to the land movement. They chose an alternative lifestyle of homesteading which included home-schooling, subsistent gardening, forestry, aquaculture, and pryotechnics.
In the 1800s this land was quarried for granite. My parents and I had a dream to share this land and preserve the rich history of quarrying, art and sustainability through educational programs.
