Help Save Colorado Open Space!

Donation protected
Our beautiful piece of the northern El Paso County area of Monument is the fastest growing region of Colorado. In 2007, there were 7,000 residents. Today there are 24,000. By 2020, that total will be at 35,500, with 3,000 new homes added. The 500-acre cow pasture south of Woodmoor, where a lot of wildlife (including pronghorns) lives, will soon have 1,000 homes. Developers are quickly destroying the beauty of the area -- the reason to move here for many of us.  South Woodmoor is a small neighborhood of fewer than 1,000 homes that used to be surrounded by Colorado's rugged beauty. Soon we will be boxed in by more real estate development that could pollute or block views and force much of the natural wildlife to relocate and fight for existence in a new habitat. The Walters’ Open Space Committee is a group of South Woodmoor residents raising money to purchase 100 acres of land originally destined to be a golf course that was not built. We want to preserve this stretch of open space as a refuge for wildlife and a nature trail for us and our pets to enjoy. There are 172 homes that border the property; their donations of $10,000 or more each will not cover the expected price tag -- not mentioned due to ongoing negotiations. We are asking for your donation to help us cover the cost to purchase, insure, post signage, along with administrative costs (i.e., mailings, yard signs, real estate lawyer and CPA).  In addition, we may have to sell some land to homeowners to increase their lot size, maybe 30 acres, behind the border homes to raise enough money to buy the land. We're at 76% of our goal by selling land behind homes but have not yet met the asking price. That's where your support comes in! We may turn the remaining acres, those not going to border property owners who have pledged, over to a charitable non-profit like the YMCA on the west side of South Woodmoor, to  create a symbiotic relationship within the community.  Or we may form our own charitable non-profit or LLC and donate the land to our homeowners association. However, our first priority is to get a contract to purchase the land. We are losing our open spaces in the Monument area! We gratefully appreciate any donation for any amount to help us save the open space in South Woodmoor in northern El Paso County before it is overrun up by developers!  GOFUNDME has determined we are a valid organization and is releasing money to us to pay our lawyer's bill!  Your support has been amazing!  We are still negotiating.  More info to come.
