Saving Costa Rica's Rarest Birds

Donation protected
Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula is one of the world's most bio-intense area, and is home to birds found nowhere else on the planet. These birds are endangered and declining. Unless we know what food they eat and what habitats they use, it is impossible to protect them.

My goal is to raise enough money to return to the nonprofit Osa Conservation's Piro Research Station so that we can protect these birds.

Last summer, I made several preliminary observations about these birds - but I need more time to finalize things like diet and habitat.

This being my second field season, I have a plan to find the information we need to save these species.

The Yellow-billed Cotinga may number in fewer than 200 individuals on the earth today. We still don't know exactly what it eats, or what trees it needs.

Last summer, I observed a Black-cheeked Ant-Tanager feeding on the plant Carludovica palmata. I want to learn more about this relationship, because the plant is common in degraded habitat - which could be vital for the birds' survival in an increasingly urbanized world. We still don't know enough to be certain about the plant's importance.

Here is that plant that I saw the Black-cheeked Ant-Tanager feeding on:

The Mangrove Hummingbird can only be found in certain mangrove swamps on the coast of Costa Rica - which are at risk from rising sea levels. We don't know much about its range size, habits, nor other factors that will be important for its protection.

Please, help save these species now. Every extinction is final. Keep this birds flying on planet earth.

Funds will cover travel costs, station fees, and any additional equipment. We fly on a tiny plane from San Jose, Costa Rica, to the remote Puerto Jimenez.

Last year, I flew BWI -> San Jose, San Jose -> Golfito , Golfito -> Puerto Jimenez by hour-long ferry, plus an hour SUV ride to the station.
