A Story from the Director of Cartagena Paws: Maureen Cattieu

I will never forget the day I rescued Peter on Oct 5th, 2018. He changed my life and has taught me to value each and every life. Peter was rescued from a dangerous, abusive situation, and now NEEDS your help to get safely to a fellow animal sanctuary in Colombia. Please read his story below...

It was a dark and cloudy rainy afternoon, as I drove around on the back of a motorcycle through the most horribly deprived areas of Cartagena, Colombia looking for a lost dog.  As we came to a muddy, garbage filled road, I spotted a tiny, black piglet with plastic hanging out of his mouth.

I jumped off the motorcycle and approached him and managed to pull the plastic bag out of his throat and stop him from choking. He quickly ran off! I ran after him through disgusting polluted puddles, garbage and mud until he arrived to his mom.

The poor momma pig was tied to a tree and hungry. I got her some food and water. However, her owner quickly approached in suspicion and thought that I was going to steal his 150-pound pig.

I explained to him that I was just feeding her and worried about her. He told me he was selling her in just a few days to be slaughtered because she wasn’t of use to him anymore and had already eaten his plants. She had a scar on her nose from a painful machete slash she had received from her last chow down in his garden.

Knowing that he was not going to let me ever help her, because she was going to be sold as a profit, I asked about the small little piglet running around squeaking next to my feet. After some persuasive discussion, he allowed me to take the baby pig.

I quickly rushed him home to my small apartment and began to take care of him. I had vets come and give him a checkup, vaccinations and deworm him. Peter is now 4 months old and is one big bundle of joy!

Peter has been living with us now in our one bedroom apartment for a little over a month now. We had high hopes of flying him to the United States, however the USDA has confirmed with us that it is impossible due to regulations about swine import from COLOMBIA to the USA, so he must stay in Colombia. Cartagena Paws does not have a designated area of land yet to set up our animal sanctuary, due to a lack of funds and therefore, we need to find him a safe place to live all the rest of the days of his life. He is growing by the day and pigs can live as long as 20+ years!

We have found an Animal Sanctuary in Colombia who is willing to receive him! All we need to do is get him there, build his habitat, and supply him with food and medical care. The total cost of getting Peter Piper to Safety and creating him a dream home is almost 4,000 USD (the additional fundraiser goal is to cover the costs that GoFundMe's payment processors withhold).

FUTURE AMBITIONS AT CARTAGENA PAWS:

Our dream at Cartagena Paws is to have an Animal Sanctuary of our own someday. Our Boston Hub Managers Rose Kenney and Samir ElKamouny are working hard on making this dream become a reality in the United States. Many other of our Cartagena Paws Hub Leaders in Seattle, California, New York, Florida, and D.C. hold the same dream and we have high hopes of achieving that goal someday.

Our Director Maureen Cattieu and her husband will be able to secure an affordable area of land in Colombia in the near future and care for small amounts of injured and abused animals at a time, until they can be adopted internationally or to responsible homes in Colombia.

One day, together we will be able to save animals around the world together. All it takes is a little hope, dedication, love and donations! Today is your day to help save Peter Piper's life.

His life in Cartagena would have been a miserable life full of neglect, abuse, starvation, at least now he has a chance with us.

WE INVITE YOU OR YOUR ORGANIZATION TO SPONSOR PETER PIPER AND OUR QUEST TO GET HIM TO SAFETY!
