Before you read our story we would like to you know these key facts:

We are a charity.

As a charity we are facing difficulties this year meeting our running costs - this year it is going to be difficult for us to meet our basic costs which will ultimately affect our ability to continue to protect your woodland.

We are not a council run facility and we are therefore not funded by the council.

We rely on the generosity of our visitors to help us continue our work.

Grant funding helps us, but this is limited and restricted to restoration and community development projects.

Without your continued support we will not be able to continue our work.

Penllergare Valley Woods is a highly significant designed historic landscape located on the edge of Swansea, Wales’s second largest city. The Woods are one of the last remaining green spaces in the north of Swansea with 12 square miles of woodland, 7 miles of footpaths and 150 years of Welsh history and is once again under threat from housing development. The Woods are managed by The Penllergare Trust, a local volunteer charitable group first established in 2000 to stop the destruction of the site which over the last twenty years has been under constant threat from the expansion of neighbouring housing developments.

In addition, the woodland had been neglected and had become a dumping ground for stolen vehicles, vandalism and other anti-social behaviour which was also threatening to destroy a unique haven of historical and environmental significance.

Thanks to the work of the charitable trust and its’ volunteers and Friends Organisation, Penllergare Valley Woods has now become an extremely popular visitor attraction. Over the last five years the charitable trust has gained critical acclaim for the restoration work on the historic landscape and buildings, together with national recognition for its’ work within the community, with the latter resulting in the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service

The Trust’s Mission is

“To protect, conserve, restore and maintain the cultural landscape of Penllergare for the present and future benefit and enjoyment of the people of Swansea and their visitors; also to promote the appreciation and knowledge of Penllergare, together with the protection and conservation of the wildlife and their habitats.”

Our local community is a
t the heart of everything we do and our success ultimately depends on their support. However, recent events such as the destruction of ancient trees arising from a new housing development and the Council’s decision to agree to a further development of 2,000 houses on the eastern boundary of the woods will increase pressure on this unique environment and the ability of the Charitable Trust to continue to protect the site with limited resources.

To combat this threat, the Charitable Trust needs to find £100,000 each year to continue to protect the woodland. This amount includes an annual rental sum currently of £25,000  and we are now facing a further increase before any restoration and preservation work is undertaken. The Trust through its' fantastic volunteers, Friends organisation and very small team of staff continue to strive to raise this amount. However,  it is getting increasingly difficult and we need your help to continue our work  whilst trying to overcome the increasing pressures from
neighbouring developments and the lack of grant funding opportunities available to us.

Please give what you can, share our cause, visit our site and help us to continue to preserve a unique and magical place. Every penny donated will go towards protecting and preserving this wonderful place. Help Save Penllergare Valley Woods for the future generations

How it Works
  1. You are donating to PayPal Giving Fund UK, a registered charity (No. 1110538), which will email you a receipt for your donation and claim Gift Aid where eligible.
  2. GoFundMe’s platform is free. The charity will typically receive the funds from PayPal Giving Fund within 15-45 days of your donation if the charity has enrolled (or 90 days if the charity has not yet enrolled). Unlike other platforms, 100% of any Gift Aid will go to the charity as well.
* In very limited cases, a recommended charity may cease to meet PayPal Giving Fund's legal or other eligibility requirements. In such cases, PayPal Giving Fund will reassign the funds to a similar charity, and (wherever possible) seek a new recommendation from donors.
