Save Maine Bats

~We need your help to save Maine Bats.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 for our bat treatment program here at Acadia Wildlife Center, in Bar Harbor. The Center is a small, non-profit, wildlife rehabilitation facility, started in 1994, to care for and release injured and orphaned native wildlife. The Center’s funding comes solely from public donations. Each year we treat an average of 250 wildlife patients from moose to eagles to turtles, but we specialize in the care of bats. Acadia Wildlife is one of only two places in Maine where you can send an injured bat, and we receive them from all over the state.
~Why save bats?
Despite the mythology and the very bad rep, bats are involved in almost every aspect of our lives. Virtual vacuum cleaners of the skies, they eat millions of the bugs that cause us problems. They save U.S. farmers and foresters billions of dollars annually in crop pest control; keep our backyard mosquitos manageable; and keep mosquito borne diseases under control. The southern species pollinate a huge number of the food plants that we eat, and disperse seed, almost single handedly, of the tropical forest trees. Their 1100 species worldwide make up a quarter of all our mammals on earth. They are clean, beautiful, intelligent and talented animals, which are essential to our environment. We love bats.
~Part of the rehabilitation process for any wild patient is exercise.
We want to build a bat flight cage where recovered animals can fly, regain their strength, and where the babies that we raise could first practice hunting bugs in a safe space. The flight cage would be an octagon allowing the bats to fly around and around, and would be built with as much donated material and labor as possible. We need $8000 for this building, and additional funding to pay for the thousands of mealworms that they eat. We have great indoor facilities at Acadia Wildlife, but no outdoor building, making successful release of our bats, difficult. This building would be the first of its kind in Maine. Can you help?

Several of our Maine species are endangered now, due to massive die-offs from the fungus, White-nose, introduced to the U.S. in 2006. In most places 95% of colonies are gone. We need to act quickly to save the remainder, giving scientists time to find a solution before extinction. Bats are the slowest reproducing mammals of their size on earth making each individual vitally important. We can make a huge difference by caring for the ones that we can treat and release. PLEASE HELP!!
