Save our puppy, little Miss Olive

$250 of $6,700 goal

Miss Olive has had one hard knock after another in her short 6 months of life.  As a newborn she was abandoned on the side of the road with her three siblings.  Fortunately they were discovered and taken in by a local rescue.  That's where we found her and it was instant love.  See we lost our Maple Dog after 14.5 years of love earlier this year.   Olive  instantly filled the hole in hearts.   But soon after we adopted her she got sick.  Not eating, diarrhea, not playing.   Miss Olive had a raging parasite infection in her gut.  A month of medications and lots of TLC and she was back to her fun loving self!  Olive loves life.  She bounces like a deer when she runs! She is plays non-stop with her big brother, Gumdrop.  She loves exploring and sticks twice her size!  She may be little, at 8 lbs, but she is fierce and holds her own.  But there is also a gentleness about her, greeting everyone she meets with cuddles and kisses.  At night she likes nothing better but to lay by your side.   Until this week that is when once again, life is trying to knock her down.  Olive stopped eating, began to not control her pee, and began unusual behaviors (only running along walls until she could twitch in a corner; not moving when we put her down for up to 10 min before finally sitting).    After $400 in tests and fluids, the vet believes she has a Portalstenosis Shunt.  This is a fancy term for saying the liver didnt start working properly after birth.  This can happen in Yorkie Terriers and Shi Tzus of which we think she is mixed).  Toxins are starting to build up in her body and her brain which is why she began to act wierd.   The treatment is an ultrasound ($400-500) and surgery ($5800 assuming no complications). It is a very delicate surgery and must be done in the next few weeks.  We are now managing her symptoms with a special diet but without this lifesaving surgery, the average life expectancy is 10 months from the onset of symptoms.  With the surgery, she is expected to lead a full and long lifespan.   Everyone is telling us to put her down, she is just a dog.  But to us she is family; a baby in the family with an entire life ahead of her.   And after loosing our Maple this year, loosing another would destroy us all, especially my 12 yo daughter and 8 yo son.   Will you please help us, and pray for, save Miss Olive?

It appears Olive's roller coaster ride has finally ended. The CT was completely normal. So what does this mean? For one, no surgery! Yeah! But she still isn't ok. Why was her bloodwork bad? They have decided she has Hepatic Microvascular Dysplasia. Essentially the blood vessels inside her liver are very tiny. They work ok getting rid of most toxins, but can't get rid of all the toxins because of their small size. It means a lifetime of medicine and special food. The food she hates. But if we keep her symptoms under control, she should live a normal life.

Thank you all for your prayers, encouragement, and support. It was a lot of money to figure this all out. And will continue to be to keep her healthy. Funds raised won't now go to surgery but will be used to continue to keep her healthy. We promise to love her dearly and keep her safe for her entire little life. God Bless you all!
She hates her food. We'll make it work!

With one phone call, our hopes have been shattered. The vet said her bile tests came back worse then before. So for sure a liver problem, and we are back to the shunt and surgery. CT scan scheduled for next week will run $1000 dollars. And because of the severity of her symptoms, she possibly has both a liver problem AND a neurological problem.

I am not giving up on her. She slept on me all night and woke me up with a hundred kisses this morning. She stays right by me in my times of need for this year of he*$. I am going to stay right by her.

Her fur brother Gumdrop was lost without her yesterday. The vet gave us different food and a new medicine to help remove the ammonia from her body. Wow what a difference. They played all morning. She is so full of hope and life. We aren't going to take that away from her.

Thank you all again for your prayers and support and donations. We could not have made it this far without you. There is a special place in Heaven for those that love the animals as much as people.

So today was the big day. Moment of truth so to speak and it was an interesting day. The vet staff at Midwestern University Companion Animal Institute was amazing. They said for the severity of her symptoms her liver tests should be way worse. So rather than an ultrasound they kept her
and repeated her labwork. So far normal!!! Still waiting on the big test to come back tomorrow - the bile study.

But we aren't out of the woods. Olive is not ok and now we have to figure out what is wrong. Today was another bad day so it was perfect for the specialist to see. She had new behaviors for them that we haven't noticed.

If the bile study is abnormal then it's now a CT scan and then still likely surgery. If it is normal it means more testing and a neurology specialist.

Thank you all for your continued support and prayers. Today's visit was $300 so even if surgery is out your donations are helping. Many have told us, some rather strongly, that we should just put Olive down. My heart was broken when we lost Maple this year. It was broken further when my father developed rapidly advanced Alzheimer's. To loose our Olive, well, I can't begin to think how much more broken I can get...
Waiting for the vet today.
