SAVE LITTLE DORIS's EYES.

I found this photo in my facebook news-feed. I could not sleep all night.  That image has broken all our hearts.
I reached out to the phone number attached to the photo and heard about Little Doris. Upon sharing to find the family, my sister, Confidence Haugen reached out and we began this journey.

The initial information we gathered from the Zena foundation, the group that found and posted little Doris's photo on facebook was what began as pain the eyes became a full blown unfathomable infection. The family went from Aflao Hospital to Ho Regional Hospital and were referred to KorleBu Teaching Hospital. They were charged 18,000ghc (3600 USD) for the surgery and unable to come up with the funds, returned to their village of Ehi/Exi in the Volta Region.
Naomi Arthur, a nursing officer and a lecturer at the Ho Nursing Training college who operates the  Zena Foundation (Non Profit) found the child and has been reaching out to the public for support with none forthcoming.

My sister, Confidence Haugen and I, Leila Djansi reached out to Naomi and arranged for little Doris to get to the hospital asap. On arrival, they found the medical history of little Doris and we discovered that, a year ago, when this began, only one eye had been affected.  The Drs at the Korlebu teaching hospital told them the surgery to remove the one eye would be 1800ghc ($360). They were shown pictures of children living full lives blind or partially vision impaired. They were to return for the surgery after they were counseled by the Drs on that day. According to the parents, they  could not afford the 1800ghc so they returned to their village to consider. Not having a proper understanding of their negligent act, they did not return to the hospital for the surgery. According to the Drs, they had raised the 360 dollars but could not reach the family to tell them and carry out the surgery.

Little Doris was left to her fate for a whole year. This initial diagnosis was in March of 2018. Two months ago, January 2019, the eye suddenly distended and remained that way without the parents doing anything until Zena foundation found the child and posted that photo.

We understand where everyone would want to lay blame. But, that will not help little Doris. Her condition does not change anything and cannot change anything. The priority of Confidence and I right now is to give Little Doris a future. And this future includes, chemo, surgery, possible reconstructive plastic surgery, and if there is any chance of a transplant in Ghana or abroad. This future includes rehabilitation, orientation for the parents so they learn how to take care of a child with a disability. Doris will have to attend a school for the blind, she is 2 and a half years old, she would need blind learning aids which are quite pricey. We would love to establish the parents as they have no viable means of income which is what led to their negligent nature.

The funds being raised  will be spread over more than just chemo, surgery, hospital stay, possible reconstructive plastic surgery, hotel accommodations for the family in Accra, transportation for the family, possible transplant, rehabilitation etc.
