Save Nicaragua's 'La Mariposa'

$2,670 of $10,000 goal

Raised by 41 people in 2 months
La Mariposa is a Spanish school & eco-hotel in San Juan de La Concepción, Nicaragua. It’s not a traditional business; it’s not run for personal profit.

All profits from the school and hotel support a constellation of projects provided to the community free of charge: physical therapy for children with disabilities (a project known as "Chispa de Vida", or "Spark of Life,") English language learning and enrichment programs for poor families, protection of local open space, animal rescue and much more.

Nicaragua has suffered political challenges in recent months, and tourism has completely dropped off. As a result, the Mariposa team is having trouble funding its vital programming. That’s where we come in!

A donation of $12.50 will ensure that 25 disabled children receive one nutritious lunch after their weekly equine-assisted physical therapy.

A donation of $20 will feed one of La Mariposa's 79 rescued dogs for one month.

A donation of $50 will pay the monthly wages of two physical therapists who provide hydrotherapy to disabled children once weekly.

A donation of $100 will pay the weekly wages for four English teachers who provide free language classes to poor children once weekly.

A donation of $500 will cover the weekly costs of the Chispa de Vida program, including the employees' salaries, the children's transportation, and assistance with medical costs for the 38 program participants.

Aside from donating, the best way to support the Mariposa is to visit. Director Paulette Goudge's primary goal is to provide sustainable employment for her community, and the Mariposa is open for visitors.

Note: This fundraiser is done in direct coordination with La Mariposa. You'll notice the Mas Mariposas NGO is based in Colorado; donations will benefit the projects in Nicaragua via the USA-based fundraising arm of La Mariposa.

Thank you in advance from La Mariposa.

Dear friends, I am writing today to let you know that we did not reach our goal, but we have made a profound difference for La Mariposa. And I am so proud and thankful for your support. The $2,580.22 we raised (after GoFundMe’s fees) can support the Chispa de Vida program, its employees, and all of the children the program supports, for more than a month. That is something to feel good about.

I also want to share with you an example of the work that continues, thanks to Paulette and her team. A family friend came to know this 18-year-old boy, Carlos, who lives in a rural area of northern Nicaragua, while delivering baskets of food to poor families in her community.

After seeing this photo, Paulette arranged to send Carlos, who is unable to walk, his first wheelchair.

Carlos shows us the profound need that exists for disabled children and adults throughout Nicaragua, and the profound difference we can make. I hope each of us will reflect on our collective fortune, and what we owe to young people like Carlos.

Buenos dias!! We're almost to $2,000 -- I know we can get there!

Yesterday I had the opportunity to observe the opening of a new Mariposa-funded enrichment center for children. Classes will take place in a modest, single room with a dirt floor. Piles of donated books, art supplies, pencils and notebooks will be used by the children of a barrio known as San Pedro.

Here, Barrio San Pedro is commonly referred to as “El Chirigete” — a highly offensive term that means ‘dirty’ — a reference to the community’s poverty.

No fewer than 100 children and their parents came to the opening of the enrichment center. Children read stories with the help of teachers, and spilled outside of the classroom.

Next, I paid a visit to a Chispa de Vida project — weekly hydrotherapy for children with disabilities. Aldo, the little boy with the sweet smile, has cerebral palsy and can now swim on his own!

These services are provided to the community free of charge by the Mariposa team. And it’s in our power to keep these programs alive!

Buenos dias a todos! Our campaign has been live for four days now, and we've already raised more than $1,300! Please help us reach our goal by sharing this campaign with friends and family members.

Today, I want to share with you another dimension of La Mariposa's work: animal care. To visit Nicaragua is to see many malnourished dogs who live on the street. Paulette and her team now support 79 dogs -- including food, care and any medical treatments they need.

This morning, ten-year-old Molly (who happens to sleep in my room every night) had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from her belly. Molly came to La Mariposa as a puppy -- her family couldn't afford to feed her.

Sergio, the veterinarian in the photo, will charge La Mariposa approximately $15 Molly's treatment, including the medications and materials he used during the surgery. That's a much reduced rate -- he's another committed member of the Mariposa team. When you donate to La Mariposa, you're not only supporting education and physical therapy for local children, you're also supporting a menagerie of rescued animals who live peaceful lives at the La Mariposa properties across the community!

Hi friends! I'm so moved by your support thus far -- we've raised more than $500 in 24 hours!! There's still a long way to go, though, and we need your help to reach our goal. I hope you'll each consider sharing this fundraising page with a few friends of family members who may be interested. I've found that it's always helpful to share WHY this cause is important to you. For me, it's because I have a number of family members with disabilities, and I know that programs like Chispa de Vida are invaluable. No child should be denied the opportunity to be part of such a supportive community. For inspiration, I leave you with a video of Guillermina Goudge -- a longtime participant in Chispa de Vida programs, who now helps as a volunteer! Guillermina's mother, Paulette, is British, hence the accent :)
