My name is Shannon Baxter. I am a beekeeper and small business owner in North Carolina. We've had some really tough moments the past few days. In a blink of an eye, we have lost most of our bees due to vandals trespassing into our apiary (group of hives) and destroying our business.
On Sunday, my husband (and beekeeping partner) went to feed the bees in our out-yard (an apiary just down the road from our house) only to find that someone had vandalized them. We had 32 healthy hives this fall, and now we are down to the 6 colonies that we have at our house and a nearby farm. This is devastating in several respects. We have lost our sweet bees, gentle and amazing. We have lost our ability to use the hundreds of pounds of honey, wax, and propolis that were in the hives. We have lost probably close to half a million worker bees that keep our business going, a business that we use to educate folks on the importance of honey bees and other pollinators.
We never believed that something like this would happen to us. It has become some sort of insane trend, killing honey bees for seemingly no reason at all. It's affected our family and our business in an indescribable way. The police have been notified, our ag agent has inspected the hives and taken samples to the lab for analysis and my friend, Lori, has set up a page to help us get back up and running. It has taken an enormous gulp to swallow my pride, but maybe it's a part of the lesson I have to learn from all this. So, if you would like to help, here's a way you can.
