Here at the Hudson Valley Current, we believe we can eliminate hunger in Ulster and Dutchess counties! We’d like to bring this dream into reality with you.
We have all been hungry in our lives, but for some of our Ulster and Dutchess county neighbors, this feeling is not a temporary condition. A 2015 study showed that 10.2% of Dutchess and 11.4% of Ulster County residents face food insecurity, with over 10% of these residents being children. The Satisfy Hunger Campaign aims to address hunger and meet the needs of individuals in our community through our Satisfy Hunger dinner events where all segments of the population come together to sit down at the same table. We strive to share high quality meals in each others’ company and enjoy lively entertainment.
The Hudson Valley is a great producer of fresh, healthy, local food. With your generous support, we aim to provide at least 100 sponsored meals at the upcoming November 2018 event. Additionally, we aim to donate a portion of our proceeds to our nonprofit partners. We have preliminary plans to collaborate with Family of Woodstock, YMCA Farm Project and UlsterCorps. For our February 2019 event in Poughkeepsie, we plan to collaborate with Dutchess Outreach, Poughkeepsie Farm Project, Stock Up, and The Tasting Room.
History of Satisfy Hunger:
We are very happy to have had four successful events over the last two years that allowed us to work with approximately 14 nonprofit partners and 30 supportive businesses (including farms and restaurants). The fabulous nonprofit partners that we have collaborated with and/or donated to include Family of Woodstock, UlsterCorps, O+ Festivals, YMCA Farm Project, Good Work Institute, People’s Place, Rondout Valley Growers Association, Farm Hub, and Center for Creative Education. Our events were held at the delightful Garden House in Rosendale, the stylish Duo Bistro in Kingston, and twice at the historic Old Dutch Church in Kingston.
Some of our successes include:
• Donating $2,700 to Family of Woodstock, RVGA, and People’s Place
• Generating $2,400 toward pay-it-forward meals that allow people in need to eat for free
• Raising over $3,000 to support the continued success of our events
• Feeding over 1,000 people
• Collaborating with almost 100 amazing volunteers in our communities
By using the Current (our local currency) as a means of payment for food and donations, in addition to guests using dollars, we ensure that more of our money stays in the local community because the use of Currents guarantees that our money isn't drained from the local economy. These events are also a way to engage the over 300 users of the Current to come together to use their Currents for philanthropic giving while networking with each other to discover new ways of using the Current. Now that the campaign has been launched in Ulster County, it is our goal to bring the idea to Dutchess County in order to spread food security in our communities.

Your donations will go to providing meals at the event as well as towards supporting the programs and efforts of Dutchess Outreach and Poughkeepsie Farm Project. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to help fund the event. If we reach our goal by Thanksgiving, the total will be matched by a generous donor.

The Hudson Valley Current is a nonprofit organization in the mid-Hudson Valley that strengthens the local economy through its complementary currency, the Current. It encourages the robust exchange of goods and services locally, keeping wealth inside our region for the working members of our community. A unique and important way to empower area businesses and residents, the Current supports the establishment of economic and social well-being for all people, including those who are unemployed, underemployed, or underutilized. Since January 2014, HVC members have kept the equivalent of over $300,000 (and counting) in the local economy.
