Sarah Speaks Up, Domestic Violence

I survived ten years of domestic violence at the hands of my ex-husband. During that time I endured frequent beatings, pushing, scratching, bruises, hair pulling, rape, and I was even shot at on one occasion. I was controlled, manipulated & belittled. I was not allowed any form of birth control and the abuse never stopped, so I had two miscarriages before my daughter was born. She is eight years old now and she is a thriving, confident, well adjusted girl. I attribute that to the fact that I left her father when she was six months old. Ultimately I left because I didn't want my daughter to grow up watching the abuse and in turn have dysfunctional or violent relationships of her own.

I founded the nonprofit organization, Sarah Speaks Up, because I know how it feels to be a victim. I also know how it feels to be a survivor. I want to encourage, empower, strengthen & support people to speak up about domestic violence.

Sarah Speaks Up is working hand in hand with local domestic violence organizations to create real sustainable change. Due to our fundraising efforts, we have helped a domestic violence victim get into safe housing by assisting in paying her security deposit. For this campaign, your donation will go directly to creating the Veterans for Victims Program. For more information about the program please email me.

For my work in the community I have recieved the Live Your Dream Award from the Soroptimist of Farmington Valley, the Women of Inspiration Award from the WNBA, and the First 100 Men and Women Award from the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence. I am currently writing my memior, blogging, speaking, and developing Sarah Speaks Up. I have done several newspaper, television & radio interviews. I have spoken at several conferences and events. And I was featured in the film From Trauma to Triumph.

If you donate to the nonprofit Sarah Speaks Up you will become part of the solution. You will be helping to give voice to the voiceless. And YOU will be Speaking Up too!

Thank you!
