Sarah's Icelandic Art Residency

Donation protected

Hi I'm Sarah, I love art making, travel and fractals. (Check out this link for some lovely examples of fractals in nature.) I make ceramic sculpture, inspired by the fractals patterns that occur naturally around us in our geography, from river paths to mountain ranges. Below is a piece I made while participating in an Art Residency in Denmark. It's about 5ft across.

And here are a few pieces I made following an Art Residency in Montana

Recently I was presented with an amazing opportunity to apply for The Windgate Small Project Grant. I wrote about my long-standing dream to visit Iceland and experience the immense beauty and fractal nature of its mountains, coastlines and glaciers. I wrote of seeing large-scale ice before it’s gone, to make art about it, and to share it with the world. Glacial melt in Iceland and worldwide is rapidly increasing. The time is now to see these wonders in person.

Just take a look at the patterns on the walls of this Icelandic ice cave. Can you see the resemblance to the patterns on my sculpture?

Iceland is renown for it's immense and overwhelming natural beauty.  It is a geographic phenomenon.

As I submitted my grant materials, I applied to the Lithus Art Space Artist Residency Program, and was accepted!! WooHoo! Lithus required payment to lock down the spot before the grant results came in, and flights were beginning to increase in price. I took the gamble, paid the deposit, booked a flight with the ol’ credit card and waited

I was one of a handful of artist who were eligible to apply for this grant, and I had a one in six shot of winning. Unfortunately, last week I was notified that I was not accepted. At this point, I find myself all-in on this chance of a lifetime, and feel that I must continue forward. I'm chasing my dream of exploring the stunning natural beauty of Iceland and allowing its impact on me to manifest itself through my art.

When I land back in New Orleans I'll begin a large scale sculptural installation about my experience, which will be presented as a solo exhibition later this year. Have a look at my website to see more examples of work.

The money I raise with this Gofundme campaing will help cover the residency fee, rental vehicle, airfare, fuel, and food. Iceland is known for it’s rugged terrain, crazy beauty, and high prices. One gallon of gasoline costs $7.50! This is insane.

Here is a breakdown of the major costs.

Luthus Art Space fee, housing and studio------- $1,100

Airfare------------------------------------------------$975

Rental jeep suitable for mountain roads--------$1,525
(Even with a 20%discount!)

Food and coffee, based on estimates I’ve researched-------------$650

Gasoline----------------------------------------$750

For different levels of support I will gift a gift. This way it's a win win!
