 LA CROSSE, WI

In February 2017, Sara Beckstrand was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Within days of her diagnosis, she began an aggressive course of chemotherapy in Duluth, MN.  Unfortunately, this treatment did not have the desired outcome and she is being transferred to the University of Minnesota hospital in Minneapolis per her doctor's reccommendation.  Although this move is necessary, it takes her away from her family, including husband Thomas and children Pipa and Atley.

Sara can always be counted on to help those in need. While living in the La Crosse area, she regularly volunteered for worthy causes, including FreedomFest and WAFER. In her hour of need, she and her family need assistance to cover medical, travel, and household expenses and lost wages. This will not be an easy journey, and every donation helps.

It is with great sadness that I share on behalf of Sara's family, that Sara Beckstrand passed away the afternoon of July 1, 2017 in the company of her loving husband and sister.  She was in remission at the time of her passing, and the bone marrow transplant was effective, but she developed a case of pneumonia from a fungal infection, which led to a hemorrhage in her lung that she was not able to recover from.

Sara was a kind, generous soul. For those of you who knew her, I'm sure you remember she had a smile and laugh that could light up a room. She was an incredibly hard worker in everything she did. For those of you following her story who did not have the pleasure of meeting her, please rest assured that she was amazed by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers you all sent her way.

I was able to witness the adoration and love Sara's young children and husband had for her on numerous occasions. While this amazing family grieves please continue to keep them in your prayers. This page will remain open to accept donations for her husband and children.

Sara's husband Thomas has shared with me that per Sara's wishes she will be cremated and they are planning to have a celebration of life rather than a memorial, likely towards the end of July. I will post an update about the celebration once more details are known.

Again, thank you all for the support. In Sara's honor, please do something nice for someone, tell your loved ones how much they mean to you, or find something to laugh or smile about. Remember Sara's kind, loving, generous spirit, and continue to keep her family and friends in your prayers.

Sara has had the bone-marrow transplant. She developed some infections in the process and has been transferred to ICU due to the infections. She is currently on a ventilator to help with her breathing until they can get the infection treated. They have started her on antibiotics and the doctor said it typically takes a week or two for the infection to be resolved.

Sara and her family are grateful for all the support. They are asking for you to keep Sara in your prayers, as well as her children and husband,
and keep faith with Sara's fight.

Thank you and God bless.

On April 11, 2017, Sara was discharged from the U of M Hospital. Due to having to live within 40 miles of the U of M Hospital, she has been staying at the Hope Lodge in Minneapolis. On April 13, 2017, Sara got the news she (and everyone else) was waiting for; she is in remission! Whereas this was exciting news and a step in the right direction, the clinic visits and procedures didn’t stop there. She was able to go home over the Easter weekend, but has been to the clinic multiple times a week for regular evaluations of her blood counts and blood transfusions. On April 18, 2017, Sara’s doctor requested another biopsy be completed due to her white blood cell count. The results were still positive; no blasts and still in remission! Regardless, the doctors decided to move quickly with the bone marrow transplant. Sara began the evaluation appointments for the bone marrow transplant on May 3, 2017 and will be admitted within the next week to begin the transplant process. She will undergo more chemotherapy and radiation over the next few weeks and the bone marrow transplant will take place the last week in May. Sara is fortunate enough to be receiving the bone marrow transplant from her own sister! After the transplant, Sara will be inpatient for approximately 4-8 weeks. Sara and her family are forever grateful for all the thoughts, prayers and donations. In fact, her own words were, “words can’t describe the gratitude!”
