As some of you may remember, when I swam the English Channel in a single crossing in 2013 I barely made it out alive. This time, just to make it a little harder, I'll be attempting something that's never been done before; a double crossing of the channel in the freezing temperatures of June. From 22-29 June 2017 I will be swimming for a beautiful and courageous young lady fighting a life threatening blood cancer.
At the age of 10 Sara Lynch was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Battling this disease has seen Sara face intense chemotherapy and 16 visits to the operating theatre for 13 Lumber Punctures, 6 Bone Marrow tests and the insertion, maintenance and removal of a port-a-cath.
Sara hasn't been on this journey alone however and has had her family by her side every step of the way. Once the initial shock of learning of Sara's illness had passed, her father, Matt, said "the tears eventually stopped and it was time to roll up the sleeves and fight the cancer together as a family."
After learning of her diagnosis in May 2015, Matt, Sara's mother and brother moved from Armidale to Sydney, living between Ronald McDonald House and the kids' cancer wards. After an initial five-month stay, the Lynch's returned a short time later for another two and a half months, all part of Sara's two-year treatment plan.
The Lynch's have made many sacrifices throughout Sara's journey and endured unimaginable pressures, facing financial, psychological, welfare and life challenges which have required great strength and support.
I want this swim to recognise the incredible spirit and bravery Sara and her family showed in fighting her cancer and for the money raised to be a reward for a very special girl, who should never have had to experience the extreme physical and mental toll of cancer.
