Communal library for San Pablito
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Joaquin and I am currently volunteering with a local Ecuadorian non-profit called COAGRO. Part of my commitment involves working in a rural, indigenous community called San Pablito de Agualongo located 1.5 hours north of Quito. I am working alongside a Peace Corps volunteer, Jonathan, who is finishing up his two year service.
San Pablito is an agricultural-based community where families are occupied on a daily basis with manual labor such as milking cows or harvesting grains. Typically, free time is used playing sports or socializing with friends and family -- very rarely do community members read for fun which is attributed to the lack of books in San Pablito.
For this reason, Jonathan and I are fundraising $300 for the construction of a communal library and the purchase of English, Spanish, or Kichwa (indigenous Ecuadorian dialect) books for all ages. With your support, this project will help give 550 residents access to free books, which will promote literacy and inspire a culture of reading. Thank you in advance for fostering educational development and providing a fun, constructive source of entertainment.
Budget:
- construction of communal library (bookshelves, locks, paint, etc.): $150
- purchase of books: $150
Time frame:
- fundraising goal: May 24 (3 weeks)
- construction: May 31
- completion of project: June 14
