Sandlyn Fultz Back surgery and travel expense

Donation protected
Sandlyn is a 22 year old college senior who due to the pain and danger of her present medical condition has had to withdraw this semester from Athens State University (she has only 2 semesters left before graduation) and take a medical leave of absence from campus employment. She is a member at Hughes Road church of Christ in Madison, AL and has been a Christian for 10 years. She is at her parents awaiting surgery.

Sandlyn is known for the faith, positive attitude, and resolve with which she has faced numerous health issues over the years.  She is a 2-time cancer survivor and has had the bones in her legs rebuilt 8 times.  She has endured 2 previous scoliosis surgeries, the most recent 6 years ago.  Recently, the 2 full-length titanium rods, inserted to support her spine, have both broken and the previous spinal fusion is failing.  As a result, Sandlyn’s spine has lost a couple of inches in height, causing her intense pain, nausea, weakness and shortness of breath.

Due to the complexity of the surgery her condition requires, Sandlyn has applied for and been accepted for treatment by the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.  She has been matched with a neurosurgeon and scheduled for a surgical consultation.  The first available appointment is in early March, but she has been instructed to check daily for cancellations in hopes of making the trip sooner.

Even though Sandlyn is insured, many expenses will be incurred in pursuit of treatment at Mayo Clinic.  In addition to medical expenses (deductibles, co-pays, etc.), she and her mom anticipate needing to make 3 or 4 trips to Minnesota which will incur expenses for air fare, lodging and food.

I have known the Fultz family for 22 years.   Sandlyn's mother is one of my dearest friends.  They are a hard-working family worthy of help.  Barry, Sandlyn's father, is an elder at Edward's Lake church of Christ in Birmingham where they have attended for 15 years. He works at Jack’s Family Restaurant as Corporate Trainer and Sarah substitutes at Pinson Schools. If you need any more info please email me.
