Samsara - Fire Recovery Fund

My name is Victoria and I am the eldest daughter to Sam and Sara Kimbles.

Yesterday morning my parents barely escaped the Tubbs fire in Santa Rosa with their lives. This fire has burned more than 35,000 acres and has destroyed over 1500 homes. My parent’s beautiful home was one of them.

Because of a just in time warning from their neighbor, they were able to dress, grab their cat, a laptop and cell phones, and jump in their car. Unfortunately, at the entrance to the main road, a tree blocked their way. All the other neighbors had already gotten out. However, after spending three hours trapped in their car certain this was their end, in what can only be seen as a miracle, two first responders arrived to assist them to safety.

Sara and Sam are in the “Golden Years” of their lives. Their home for the last 20+ years has been the center of our family. When we were in their home we always got the feeling of living in a glorious tree house. The decks overlooked grape vines, rolling hills, and massive trees.  My mother is an artist and a writer. She is a retired therapist, who has taught classes, held workshops and been a therapist to the people in Sonoma County all her adult life. Her home was filled with artwork, journals, and treasures from around the world. Her studio has been an inspiration and sanctuary for many budding artists. My father is a well-regarded psychologist and former President of the San Francisco Jungian Institute who has spent his life helping others heal from trauma. Their home contained the collective life’s work for them both. Now it lies amongst the ruins of their once idyllic neighborhood.

I am grateful that my parents are safe, but I can only imagine what they will need to rise up and rebuild at this time in their life. Please consider donating to them to help them in this process at this devastating time.

Your donations will help them secure an interim rental home and furnishings, acquire the technology for Sam to continue his work, and will set them back on a path to normal - whatever that can be at this point.

If you can’t donate, please share, as someone you know may be able to help.

My sister Ondrea connected with a local Sonoma County poet who has been helping people tell their Fire Stories. She wrote this remarkable poem about my Mother who, remarkably, still sees beauty in this strange situation. They are still looking for a new home, while living in gratitude, finding compassion and generosity at every turn.

Buddha's Tear

Sam and Sara finally were able to return to their home. The small hope that somehow their beautiful home had magically survived the inferno was, sadly, laid to rest. Nothing made of wood remains. But there was magic and wild, tragic beauty: intact Kwan Yins, Shizos, Goddesses and Buddhas formed a perimeter around the remains of their home- silent witness bearers. My parents, strengthened by their years of spiritual practice, experienced the immense loss of their home and life’s work and the primal power of the natural/spirit world. Now begins the process of finding a new home in Santa Rosa where Samuel can continue to serve the community and Sara can return to creating...Knowing my Mom, when the dust settles, I’m sure the next series will have something to do with the phoenix rising and making art from the ashes. Until then, the support my parents have received from you all is keeping them moving forward. Thank you all!

The kindness of the community is supporting my parents is stunning. CHP officer, Ken Engin, recently contacted me. He was one of the first responders who rescued my parents from the fire. He returned to the area and saw that the car my parents were trapped in had miraculously survived! As a surprise to my parents, he had some incredible volunteers, clean and detail the car and then personally returned it to them! This simple act of kindness demonstrates humanity at its finest! Love wins! The search for a home continues...Samuel went back to work the day after the fire. His commitment to his clients is very clear. I am in awe of the remarkable strength and faith my parents demonstrate every day. It is a daily inspiration to me.

A heartfelt thank you to all of you who have so generously contributed to this recovery fund for my parents. Seeing the aerial picture of the remains of my parents home, and the decimation of the neighborhood, makes it clear that the return to normal takes a new definition. My parents are still homeless, with only a handful of clothes. Their spirits are strong and they are so grateful to be alive. Please keep them all in your prayers and share this fundraising campaign if you can.
