Dear friends and family,
We have struggled for a while with whether to share this deeply personal and intimate issue with you, our friends and family, because it is not in either of our natures to burden others with a request for financial help. With that said, we want to share a little of our story to provide some context for the help we are requesting from those whom we know and love.
As you may know, since being diagnosed with a benign yet inoperable brain tumor in 2011, Juan has been managing this ongoing health issue and all the care it requires. This includes regular MRI scans every few months and occasional chemotherapy and radiation courses of treatment. These treatments have come along with significant financial, physical, and emotional costs.
While the latest bout of chemotherapy treatment, which ended in April 2019, was successful in reducing the tumor size, it also negatively impacted Juan’s fertility. We have always dreamed of starting a family and getting to experience the joy and fulfillment of raising children. Since April, although we have explored several other avenues and received multiple medical opinions, it has become clear that In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is the only viable way for us to try to start a family.
As you may be aware, IVF is a very costly medical procedure that unfortunately is not covered under any North Carolina health care coverage. The initial cost of these procedures will range between $20,000 and $30,000 in out-of-pocket costs that need to be paid up-front prior to going forward with the procedure.
As two recently established mental health professionals, we are just beginning to pay off student loan debts, in addition to our ongoing medical bills. As a result, at this time it seems unlikely that we will be able to afford to undergo this procedure without your help.
