Stand with the Salt Spring Nine
Donation protected
All 168 protestors who have been arrested for blocking the gate to Kinder Morgan’s pipeline project in Burnaby are facing possible criminal charges. Nine of our friends/neighbours from Salt Spring Island are included.
As someone who helped organize trips up to Burnaby Mountain with the arrestees, and a Salt Spring Islander and member of the "Save the Salish Sea" group, I wanted to do something to help.
When arrested, they were charged with civil contempt. Now, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Kenneth Affleck( who issued the initial injunction for Kinder Morgan's property), has called on the Attorney General to take over prosecution of pipeline protesters and lay the much more serious charge of criminal contempt.
Now, the Salt Spring Nine need help to cover unexpected and extensive legal bills. They need $4k for a lawyer who will represent the group, and another $2-3k for anticipated appeals and expenses related to multiple trips to Vancouver to attend court.
Funds will be dispersed as needed: immediately we'll be issuing a cheque to pay the initial lawyer costs. We are collecting receipts and tabulating expenses so we can re-imburse arrestees for other additional expenses which really add up when faced with multiple trips to court. Any additional/remaining funds will be kept in an account for possible appeals or to pay fines levied by the court.
