Salem's fund for rehabilitation

Donation protected

My one year old German Shephered, Salem, and I love each other an incredible amount. He loves me just too much, though. A very common trait of German Shephered is being protective. Another, is anxiety. He has extremely high anxiety and he lashed out at strangers, dogs, and even cars in attempt to protect me and himself.
Salem, my family and I have been working on extremely severe aggression issues that started when Salem was about 5 months old. Each time we took a step forward, an incident would arise and we would take two steps back in his training. I've seen almost every single trainer in Victoria- his aggression yet continued to escalte despite the team of loved ones I had trying full force to get him to a good place. I came to the horrible realization that I couldn't handle him. I couldn't get him under any sort of control, nor could nearly my entire family.
I arrived at a place of failure. Assessments we went to with trainers or even rehoming services were turning Salem and I away, because his aggression was a liability. I felt and still feel as though I have horrifically failed this beautiful dog that is so, so sweet and so gentle and loving to me. After speaking with my vet, we had come to the conclusion that it was not only safer for my community and the children in my home, but best for him because his quality of life was so poor due to his constant stress and anxiety, to put Salem to sleep.
It shattered my heart into a thousand pieces.
I am so grateful and lucky that I have the family that I do. My Aunt and Uncle knew how much I put into his training and couldn't stand the thought of Salem being put the rest without feeling as though they did everything they could do in their power, as well. So they took him in! My Uncle is a strong and very calm-assertive man. He was able to walk Salem with greater ease than I ever could, and he even got Salem to stop lunging at cars when they drove past.
They took him to a new trainer- Mark from Zen Dogs. Salem can now, in a controlled environment, be around other dogs and, with Marks lead, could even walk through a busy park!! If I could truly desrcibe how severe Salem's aggression was in the beginning, you'd really know how HUGE of a positive change this is.
Salem has come very far in his training- however, from the assessment that Mark gave us, Salem could has a genetic defect that has caused his aggression to be as severe as it is. We also came to the conclusion that he has to have a strong and extremely experienced male owner. He is an extremely difficult dog to manage.
My Aunt and Uncle have given all of their blood, sweat and tears trying to heal and rehabilitate Salem themselves. It's more than I ever could have hoped for- because it means my Salem is still here and playing outside as a healthy dog should.
However, working full time jobs and having two dogs of their own and a child in elementary school- they have to throw in the towel, so to speak. My Aunt came into contact with a trainer through Mark who specifically deals with aggressive dogs and rehabiliates and rehomes them. It's a four week long 24 hour camp where he will be rehabilitated and rehomed.
It's $2,300 for the 4 weeks. A price I obviously can't afford, nor can my family. So, I am asking for donations to raise $1,500 to cover the rest of the cost that I can't scrape together. Anything helps, anything at all. It's been very difficult to me to reach out for help from my friends, but if it means Salem gets to live and be a happy dog, I'm going to shatter my ego and ask. I love this crazy, silly pup. He truly is an amazing dog and he really deserves to have a happy life with his perfect match.

Thank you so much for reading. <3
