Why?
In one day, approximately 10 people in Sri Lanka will take their own life, giving the Island one of the highest suicide rates in the world. With a huge disparity between Human Resources (only 67 consultant psychiatrists) and service users in need (200 daily), Sri Lankan people are desperate for more effective infrastructure within mental health services.
What?
In the summer of 2019, I will be on a mental health placement in Sri Lanka for 4 weeks, run by volunteering scheme SLV.Global. As shown in the video above, this programme has already been instrumental in providing aid to over 11,000 service users- and this total is increasing by the hour!
During my placement, I will be taking part in various projects, from teaching English for development to running positive mental health workshops in psychiatric facilities.
Who?
I will have completed a year of my Psychology in Education BSc by the time I participate in this scheme, and hope my studies will allow me to positively influence those I work with. Although I am excited to experience a new culture and gain a hands-on perspective in global mental health, I do reject the idea of “voluntourism”, and am committed to working to the best of my ability: it is my intention to be substantive during this placement. All the while, I hope to learn from my experiences and develop skills to be implemented in any further work I undertake.
How?
I am fundraising to help cover the costs of my passport renewal, flights, Visa, insurance, and placement fee (which includes homestay accommodation, meals, training, domestic transport and a donation to the charity). Any donation would be greatly appreciated!
