This list of school shooting tragedies is much too long and is painful to think about. But we need to do more than think; we need to act.
Policy debates over complex issues like mental health , guns, bullying, family dysfunction and social isolation will -- and should -- continue. But there is something each of us can do NOW to keep our kids safe while those processes wind on.
We can equip our schools with the same basic safety precautions that we already provide to adults. Think about it: office buildings have security desks and a cardswipe to gain access; at airports, courthouses, government buildings -- even sporting events -- you go through a bagcheck or metal detector; at many hotels, you need a card key to access the elevator. These access control technologies are used routinely to protect adults; we should do no less for our kids in their schools.
Some school districts are fortunate enough to have the funding to implement building access controls. But many are not. We can come together to help solve that funding problem so we can make our schools secure -- not 6 months from now or 6 years from now, but now.
SafeSchoolsInPA is being formed to provide funding for schools who want to implement building access controls to keep unauthorized persons out. Any school in Pennsylvania desiring to implement access controls will have the opportunity to apply for grants to help defray those costs.
