SACRED No Walmart Near Our Schools!
Despite there being four Walmart stores within a 20-minute drive, our issue is not about preventing another Walmart from being built. Rather, we feel that a development of this size at its proposed location presents a major concern for our children’s safety, while increasing traffic beyond manageable proportions and permanently altering the unique character of our seaside town.
Volunteers run our grassroots organization. All monies raised will go toward the legal defense and traffic studies needed to support our opposition to this Walmart development.
Our legal complaint is against Walmart’s developers and the Town of Swansboro. Under coercion from the Walmart developer’s repeat lawsuit against the Town of Swansboro, after a judge had already ruled in favor of the town's rightful efforts to restrict this development, the town commissioners approved a permit that did not meet town ordinances and went against the majority of citizens who attended public meetings opposing the project
The town later ignored its own ordinances and processed the permit application as if the application had been received prior to the zoning change to restrict building size. These and other actions were not in accordance to North Carolina state law, which gives us grounds for a legal complaint.
Another key issue is that the Walmart Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) is flawed, which may lead to road hazards.
Further explanation of our efforts as well as pertinent documents, media links, information about Walmart’s impact on communities, and ways you can get involved with SACRED can be found on our website sacred28584.org. We also have an active following on our Facebook page.
This fight is expected to take at least several months and we ask for your assistance in financing this effort. SACRED has applied for 501C3 nonprofit status.
Thank you for your support.

SACRED will be holding a Community Meeting on Wednesday, July 1st from 5:30pm – 7:00pm at the Swansboro Recreation Center, 830 Main Street Extension, in the large meeting room.
The purpose of the meeting is to update SACRED members on the activities in place to stop the development of the Walmart SuperCenter in its currently proposed location (next to the elementary and high schools).
Among the topics discussed will be the law suit, traffic planning concerns, letter writing campaign and outreach, proposed demonstration, fund raising and what SACRED members need to do in order to help stop this development from happening.
SACRED board members will answer as many questions as is possible, providing they do not compromise the cause. Copies of documents important to this issue will be available.
Please note that this meeting is for supporters of SACRED and others that are interested in learning more about our organization and in stopping the proposed development.
Please complete the poll posted below so we can have an idea of how many plan on attending. In addition, please add any questions you would like addressed. As we said above, we will answer as many as we can given the time allowed and providing they do not compromise the cause.
Thank you and we hope to see you Wednesday.
