SACRED No Walmart Near Our Schools!

Donation protected
SACRED (Swansboro Area Citizens for Responsible Economic Development) is fighting the attempts of Swansboro Investors LLC and Walmart’s plan to build a 158,000 sq. ft. SuperCenter within our Swansboro, NC (population 2,993) town limits. The proposed location is adjacent to two of our public schools and across the street from a third.  The site is serviced by only one primary road and we have reason to believe it will be saturated with the additional customer load on top of our tourist traffic.

Despite there being four Walmart stores within a 20-minute drive, our issue is not about preventing another Walmart from being built.  Rather, we feel that a development of this size at its proposed location presents a major concern for our children’s safety, while increasing traffic beyond manageable proportions and permanently altering the unique character of our seaside town.

Volunteers run our grassroots organization.  All monies raised will go toward the legal defense and traffic studies needed to support our opposition to this Walmart development.

Our legal complaint  is against Walmart’s developers and the Town of Swansboro.  Under coercion from the Walmart developer’s repeat lawsuit against the Town of Swansboro, after a judge had already ruled in favor of the town's rightful efforts to restrict this development, the town commissioners approved a permit that did not meet town ordinances and went against the majority of citizens who attended public meetings opposing the project

The town later ignored its own ordinances and processed the permit application as if the application had been received prior to the zoning change to restrict building size.  These and other actions were not in accordance to North Carolina state law, which gives us grounds for a legal complaint.

Another key issue is that the Walmart Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) is flawed, which may lead to road hazards.

Further explanation of our efforts as well as pertinent documents, media links, information about Walmart’s impact on communities, and ways you can get involved with SACRED can be found on our website sacred28584.org.  We also have an active following on our Facebook page.

This fight is expected to take at least several months and we ask for your assistance in financing this effort. SACRED has applied for 501C3 nonprofit status.

Thank you for your support.
