Sabrina's Brain Surgery/Chiari Care

"A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles."--Christopher Reeve

My sister is my hero, even though she is younger than me she has always been the one I go to  for support in my life.  That being said it seems only fitting that I come to all of you with her story to ask for help.

The last month has been extremely difficult for Sabrina and her family.  Her husband recently had two surgeries for kidney stones and while he was in the hospital her son was taken to Texas Children's Hospital which ultimately diagnosed him with Septic Shock from strep throat.  Two days later she herself ended up in the hospital after blacking out and experiencing numbness in both arms and hands, vertigo and excruciating pain throughout her body and neck.

DIAGNOSIS
Numerous tests and ultimately a brain scan with contrast gave way to finally getting an answer.  Sabrina was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation 1.  After an immediate meeting with her Neurosurgeon, Dr. Andrew Markey the plan of attack was set into place.

Sabrina's cerebellum sits 8mm into her spinal canal.  The pressure has created vertigo, numbness in her hands and arms, cluster headaches and enormous pressure in her head and neck.  Leaving this untreated could result in permanent damage to her central nervous system.  The only eligible treatment is Decompression Surgery.

TREATMENT
The Decompression surgery will be about 3.5 hours where a portion of her skull will be removed to relieve the pressure of the cerebellum pressing onto her spinal cord.  Her post op care will be 3-4 days in the ICU followed by another 2 days in a regular room.  Her recovery will be approximately (4 to 6 weeks at home) before she can return to work.  She will be on restrictive activity as she heals.

As you can imagine the price of this surgery is astronomical. The Way family  came up with their huge deductible before insurance would even step up.  The surgery cost is $150,000.00 and insurance will cover 80 percent of it.  The tenativesurgery date is in 3 weeks due to the fact they are still navigating this with insurance.

So, with all that being said I (her sister) created this account to help Sabrina, her husband and their children with some funds to help.  Sabrina and Jeremy run a small business building homes and clearly she will be out of commission.  It would be tremendous to help her with incidentals, additional medical help and out of pocket expenses.

Thank you for taking time to walk through this journey with us.  I will post updates as she gets closer to surgery and post surgery. I'm so thankful that we got a diagnosis before the damage was irreversible.  I'm also grateful for friends and family in TX that are helping my sister. Hugs from CA   --Betty
