Holidays for the Homeless: Savannah

Happy Holidays everyone! We find ourselves nearing the end of 2018 with Christmas quickly approaching. This is the time to be surrounded by family and friends, enjoying caroling and cocoa by the fire. But unfortunately, not everyone will have the means to celebrate this year...or even to be warm, comfortable and fed.
According to the Chatham Savannah Authority for the Homeless, around 4,500 people are homeless in our community. This count doesn't even include the 1001 students identified as homeless by our Chatham County public school system.
Last year, I organized Holidays for the Holidays: Savannah. We had over 50 people come out to walk downtown and distribute over 150 gift cards and Christmas cards. Most of these folks were strangers.
I can’t describe the feelings that I had that morning... strangers thanking me for organizing this, men and women on the street saying “God bless you”. It was all so empowering and emotional.
We may may have only given someone a $25 gift card to Starbucks, but the message they received was one of love and support.
Thats what Christmas is about, and that’s what we need to recreate this year.
And so, I extend this challenge to you. This event/group is created to organize a movement in Savannah. Let's all take an afternoon to really spread a little cheer to those in need.
Join us on Saturday, December 22 for the Holidays for the Homeless: Savannah. We'll meet at Johnson Square in downtown Savannah at 12 noon and then hit the streets spreading Christmas cheer.
Can't join us for the afternoon? Please consider donating a gift or gift card so that we may purchase a gift from a homeless person. We'll be happy to present it to them in your name.
And if you aren't in the position to donate, even just sharing information about our project and helping to get the word out there helps! Thank you so much in advance for your generosity and kindness.
