Sissy’s Care

Donation protected
We are passing the hat to all of Sissy’s wonderful friends to raise money for a few months of room, board and special care at her assisted living facility while we wait for her state funds to kick in.

As most of you know, she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease a while back and moved to an Assisted Living facility two and a half years ago when she could no longer live on her own due to falling. At “The Manor”, as she calls it, she has the nurse assistance she needs, as she is almost completely dependent on a wheelchair these days. Neither of us have the capacity to give her the care she needs in our homes.

The Manor life has two sides, of course. Being sick and unable to live on her own is awful for her, to say the least. It’s frustrating and depressing. She experiences a lot of dementia on top of it all and this is something harder than the loss of her legs at times. She has many, many joys in her life though- you friends who write, call and visit, her 5 grandchildren, her boyfriend Lewis who she makes escapes with to the coffee shop down the street (in two Ubers!) There is a weekly film night that she curates once in a while and a dance class with a teacher named Gentle George. She has kind souls who wheel her to dinner and help her into her pajamas, and she has the comfort of knowing that she is safe.

But... she has run out of money.

She is currently on the waitlist for a waiver program where the State of California will cover her costs with the help of an increased social security payment, but it hasn’t been approved yet.  We thought it was going to start this October since she has been on the waitlist for a year. She is now expected to be enrolled by January or February.

In the meantime, we are asking for help to cover her living costs and care.  One month of rent, meals and Assisted Living at her care level is $4000.

We know how much her well being means to you all. So often people ask how they can help, and right now, this is the way. Anything you can give will help to bridge this transition.  We are sad and a bit lost with all of it. The temporary solution is to cover these costs and we know we can ask you, her chosen family, the people who she loves, for help.

We thank you, our hearts bursting- rising, falling, twisting- like Sissy on the dance floor.
