Three years ago, my niece sat and passed the nursing board exams to become a RN. She was very proud of herself and her achievements and was eager to start a new career in the nursing field. We too, were very proud of her, for her stoic personality, her determination and her resiliency. At age 25, she felt she was well on her way to make a great life for herself, get married and have a family of her own... the dream that every young woman her age, aspires to. A couple of years ago, my wife and I and our two boys took her to a local buffet restaurant in our home town, for dinner while she was visiting from Florida.

After returning home from the restaurant, she started vomiting. We thought maybe, she ate something that did not go well with her. So, we did not give it much thought that something was wrong. It was not until a week later after returning to Florida, to start her new job search as a nurse at her local hospitals and other health facilities that her situation worsened. The symptoms persisted and just would not go away, but nothing had prepared us for the news we were about to receive.

After complaining of stomach discomfort, her parents took her to the local hospital, where they performed several tests on her. During the tests, the doctors discovered that she had a large tumor in her stomach. They did not know what it was at the time, as they were still running more tests to determine the origin of it. They were of the suspicion that it might be cancer but did not know for sure until they had conducted more tests. Doctors removed the tumor and then sent it to the laboratory for further tests. So, my niece was sent home after a couple of weeks stay at the hospital and was to return later for more examinations. In the interim, her digestive system seemed to be deteriorating. She could not digest any foods and/or keeping anything down. After another trip to the hospital, they diagnosed her with bowel obstruction, so they thought. They had her going through the gastrointestinal decompression to alleviate the discomfort and the pain she was having.

In a period of two months, her health was getting worse and worse. Without proper insurance and savings, this made it financially difficult for the family to keep up with all the hospital and medical bills, the medications and the back and forth visits to specialists’ office. Things have completely caught everyone off guard. So much so for her mother who graduated along side her from the nursing program they attended the year prior. Both mother and daughter were looking forward to climb the ladder of success. All that seems to be in the rear view mirror now, as she lies on a hospital bed fighting for her life.

We are a family of faith and have always been... we also believe that God has His own unique way of doing things. With my niece being diagnosed with colon cancer and is now on life support, this brings the reality of losing her closer and closer to home. There is no greater pain, than a mother or father watching their child deteriorating right before their own eyes and cannot do anything about it.

The doctors already told the family that they have exhausted all the possibilities and there is nothing else they can do. I am appealing to all the good samaritans and all the kind hearted individuals out there, to help this family and help save my niece’s life. The medical bills are keep coming and her situation is getting worse. We don’t believe on giving up until the battle is completely lost. The profile picture for this fund raising for my niece  shows her in her joyful moments . Along side her on the right of the picture is her aunt (my wife), before the cancer diagnosis. Please let us be our brothers’ keeper. Thank you in advance, for your kind support and for anything you are willing to contribute.
