Russell Ranch Barn Fire

The facility located on the NW corner of Russell Blvd and Pedrick Rd, colloquially known as "Cactus Corner" has been a mainstay in the community for over a century.  Originally a working dairy, the property was upgraded to horse facilities by the prominent Davis family, the Wingers.  Long time residents will remember that Winger’s Department Store, located in downtown Davis, provided goods and services to the Davis community for decades.  The Ruhe family trust has carried on the Davis horse boarding tradition for the last two decades.

The historic barn was lost to a horrific fire, fueled by unrelenting high winds. The blaze not only threatened nearby structures, but also burned 5 acres of University property, forcing an evacuation of the Primate Center.  

Fortunately, due to the quick action of friends, neighbors and, of course, multiple fire departments, no lives were lost and no injuries sustained. 

The family sincerely thanks all of the fire fighters who fearlessly responded.

Without this tremendous response,  many more lives would have been at risk and even more serious property losses sustained. 

And while everyone is grateful for no loss of life, the property damage was immeasurable as antique and family heirlooms were lost in addition to private property owned by individual horse boarders. 

This site is an effort to raise funds for the long time supportive boarders whose horse tack and equipment was not covered by insurance. These items are expensive and often difficult to replace.
